Vince Green
the only shop for a 30 miles And there lies the story. Don't get so het up about ammo prices. In a rural economy people have to make a living or the shop wont be there when you go back next time. In the 1920s a single box of .22 (50 rounds) cost nearly the eqivilent of a day's wages for an average working man. A box of 25 shotgun cartridges cost over a day's wages. Today we have it so soft that both are about an hours wages based on the minimum wage. Its not so bad.

cooter
I was out in Taunton with Lez325 off here, and the shop he was using was charging £20 a box of 50 as well. I know from my local RFD that they get them at a reasonable price, and he said the deal was that they keep the price around the £10 mark, so that they could all make a bit on a sale, but £20 is a bit much. Is he maybe getting the Box rate and 100 rate mixed up What did he say when you challenged him about the prices, I can't believe you just paid and walked away

Blunderbust
God knows what the cost of ammo in the 1920's has to do with the fact that Frank Thomson of East High Street, Creiff has had you big style. Just you think that he probably buys his orders in bulk as the other dealers in the area of Perth do, for example Mallochs who when they buy in bulk pay approx £6 a box of 50 HMR. I dont know what they are selling them at now but it used to be £9.50p. Just because you are 30 miles away from the next dealer it does not give greedy AH's the right to double the RRP. I used to shop there regular as he always had a fair selection of clothing and other field sport goodies but after reading this I will make sure that I never ever go back near his shop. I take it by your boss you mean the head keeper who will of course be answerable to the estate factor and so on. Another point that I cant understand, is why your boss is not negotiating a better deal with Paul, as if he is not willing to travel to Perth for example and get them at a decent price then he should be pushing the fact that he is probably one of their better customers within the area and there for should be on a special rate for the estate. £20 for 50HMR is an outrage and I can't see him selling many of them at that price. I am going to make a point of calling Paul on Monday and ask him what his best price would be on 1000 and if he quotes me anywhere near that price I will tell him not to bother. Will do mate, as I said I used to shop in there regular and think it is an outrage what he is doing, I would hate to think what he is bumping his other stuff up to. I know that Crieff in general is a tourist place and prices do get a bit higher for touristy kit but to bump ammo up to that level is not on. I would hate to think what he would charge me for say a box of 20 .243 or 30-06 ammo. Edited May 14, 2011 by Blunderbust

By the way your boss has a hard neck 100 HMR rounds a month for a game keeper is nothing, I am using about 300 in 2 weeks and I am only shooting every second or third day (Granted I do like to check zero at least once a week). I suppose once my quarry is thinned down my amounts will of course reduce accordingly.
highseas
cf ammo is about 20£ a box for like 223 and 243 my head keeper got 20 .270 last week and i think he paid about 34£ for them! yeh i used to buy all my own ammo, but it got a bit much, tigh is not the word where my boss is concerned! i too check my zero on all rifles once a week, if i set about the vermin proplerly i can use a box of 17 and 20 223 in a couple of days, but my god he would squeel

minghis
was that west country guns,i dont go there now Interesting. Dunno about the HMR but in my experience they used to always be running out of Winchester Subs suggesting that there used to be frequent supply problems. After always finding them elsewhere I too don't buy mine from there now. I often wondered if the 'supply problems' really meant they were trying to keep the price high.
