Simple fact is shooting the dog would probably work but its not a good option. I know cases where it has worked but in all of them they have been keepers and have been ready to take on the issues that came back. In this case assuming you don't have psycotic tendencies then best option is get on the ground with night vision and every time you see him at it call it in. If he has a vehicle then get the reg reported every time as that way they can usually arrange to remove it. If he is lamping them then might be worth putting some cats eyes on fences preferably barbed wire and see if you can stop it that way.

well where do i start last year while out lamping with verminator69 on one of my shoots we came across a local lad who has been netting the river through my shoot for sea trout(poaching ) .we chased him across a stubble field in the dark in my landy and he jumped into a wood a would not come out .we found him push bike and were going to drive over it in the landy (we never saw it cause it was dark :lol: ) but the farmer didnt want any hassle which i can under stand he has to live there after all .

now the water bailifs have been trying to catch him all year with no luck and he has been very abusive with people who live on the farm when they have approached him .

well on saturday i was haveing a look round the shoot and who cycles up the track behind me well he **** a brick when he realised it was me (i have changed my car)and started to try and talk to me asking if i had shot any roe .i said i had shot every roe buck i had seen (not true btw )the cheaky **** said would i leave him a couple to run his lurcher on when the wheat gets cut. i told him to **** off and i would shoot the dog if i seen it running on roe he said he had been coming here for years and who the **** was i to tell him not to come here :lol: when i told him he was poaching he said so what what could we do about it after asking about i have found out who he is and will be haveing a chat with the local wildlife officer (the farmer now wants this sorted outand has told me the dog is to get shot if its off a lead )has any one else had this sort of problem this boy looks like a real junckie and is all mouth by all accounts.where do i stand with shooting the dog its a shame as its not the dogs fault.

i know i have to be carefull with him as i have rifles with me and it would be easy for him to say i pointed it at him or worse i plan to have a chat with the local police to convey my concerns about this

I JUST COULDNT GET OVER WHAT A COCKY CHEEKY **** HE WAS

What ever you do for heavns sake dont shoot the dog ! that coud back fire on you as it has been illegal to shoot a dog in hot pursiut of game for donkies years , a farmer is in his right to shoot a dog if its caught red handed worrying his farm stock & legally wild game is not farm stock , fenced in deer on a deer farm are stock but wild deer are not . Take care in the way you handle this as if it back fired on you then you may have to pay the so&so compensation & that would be painfull !, its not the poor dogs fault any way . Look for another way & good luck Pole Star

Sorry guys but i'm surprised by how many would do nothing.

People like this lad become the people they are, partly because no one gives a ****.

What he is doing is illegal, apart from that, the worst poaching crime IMHO is running deer with dogs.

I would simply get the wildlife officer on side and ask him how best to pick this guy up in the act. He will have a pattern, particularly if he's a netter.

It will cost you some time in planning and waiting but if you work with the wildlife officer he will arrest the guy and 10 to 1 he will have previous and therefore be out of your hair for a while. If he's a druggie he's either a petty thief, burglar or you would have a hell of a lot more to shoot if he was on HMP

The chances are the police could also involve the RSPCA and get him banned from owning a dog to prevent the poaching of deer. After all, although the dog doesnt know it, its a tool of his purpose.

If all this fails, then you can tell the farmer you have done all thats possible and leave it up to him.

In my view condoning crime is not an option - a criminal is a criminal and those who would do nothing deserve to live with criminals, after all, thats what they are doing.

Kes - I'm not so sure that the majority of replies are saying "Do nothing", what we are trying to say is to make sure that whatever "Cocker3" does he should try to do it in as legal a way as possible so that there are no reprocussions on either him or the farmer!

I don't think that there is a single member who would question the fact that what this little **** is doing is illegal or that running deer with dogs is inhumane (And in my opinion unforgivable)!

Yes the chap needs and deserves sorting out, but taking the law into your own hands when you potentially have so much to loose (Your FAC, your Rifles and possibly your freedom) is not the answer!

One of the problems that I see here (And in many other cases where poaching is involved) is getting the law and the courts to come down with it's full force on the poacher who obviously has a total disregard for the law and other people's property rather than just giving them a slap on the wrists and telling them not to do it again!

Frenchie, I take your point, I absolutely hate poachers and allowing them to get away with it - but i wouldnt advocate a risky course of action for the OP. My belief is that if you turn a blind eye, someone else eventually picks up the tab. I would like to see a situation where we all avoid "walking on the other side of the road", and try to eliminate this type of petty crime in rural areas.

Cheer

think this is your best bet mate let the law sort this problem out and it keeps you out of trouble to.no doubt this person will have the plod pressing charges against you if you knocked him about abit, this is how they work these days mate anything for a claim.also shooting a mans dog undoubtedly will bring trouble direct to your door, cars damaged etc.seen it happen in the past mate.

:lol: yeh highseas it is the river tyne that runs into the forth

now hear is my veiw on it, with out getting caught up on the dog shooting things whitch by the way is your call and your only!!

poaching to me is one of the lesser crimes unless it feeds bigger things ie (drug takeing)

fish as i se them have no owner and should not belong to one man or group of men, i am not pround to say that a lot of my "secondry" wage comes from makeing nets its some thing ime very good at and can rigg a 100m net in less that 2 hours, i dont know where they get used most are sold to be used lawfuly but others may not be, i do know that ive killed hundreds of salmon and sea trout and had to let them rot on the tide, i wish i had caught 1,100th of the salmon on a rod as i have with a net. but thats that.

if you go to the forth by fallin at high tide at night and slam your car door real loud you will hear lots of out board motors start up and zoom away. i recon from what i know, 5-600 salmon are killed in the estury a week, from poachers.

this we chappie seems like a *****, the one way to realy realy cure him is keep cutting his nets up/takeing them he cant buy/make more for ever. going to war with him is not a good idear at all he can **** your day up alot more than you can his.

A gamekeeper local to me shot a lads dog a few years ago for coursing on his land .

He came back and found every poult killed a few weeks later as well as larsens broke up , live traps taken and his motor smashed every time it was parked up .

Threatening a mans dogs does funny things to peoples minds !!!

Interesting post re: legalities etc

Don't want to get into the ethic's of shooting someone's dogs and all that entails, but,

where would you stand with respect to what's actually conditioned on your FAC? Deer/Vermin/Fox...Dog?

Seems a dodgy one to me?

Whilst I would never condone the shooting of a dog unless under extreme conditions (ie its in the process of chewing up a lamb)...

possibly condition 8. (on mine anyway) "The shooting of vermin or, in course of carrying on activities in connection with the management of any estate, other wildlife"

not sure they class as wildlife though, i've always wondered about this condition, as surely it permits you to shoot just about anything? (ie moles or crows)

whats funny yous are slagging a lad off yous dont know.he has told you he has been going on the land for yrs and you might of only had the permission for a couple of yrs,you dont own it and he has had the decent thing to tell you this.it is illegal to shoot a dog if its not worrying live stock so you nor the farmer can do anything about that,he might be a decent lad but you might be gellous of him taking the game you could be shooting as you have the permission not him.ive see the green eye monster come out in people who have just got the permission when others havn't,if you talk to the lad sensible instead of you thinking you own the land things might be different and he might work with you.i have permission when others have poached for yrs it doesnt bother me as they arn't stealing off the farmer or damaging things so why worry about it.but if it hurts you that much fairenough smash his bike uo and his nets and wellies he might end up taking the hint at the end but if you threated to shoot my dog things would be different as if you pulled the trigger on it you would have to pull it on me running straight towards you.at the end of the day you wouldnt like your dog to be shot as its not the dogs fault you use it for a job and thats all it knows.p.s if i could write a novel i would of worded this better than i have.atb mate i hope it works out good for you.

While the sentiments on how you would react to someone treatening to shoot your dog I can empathise with, the rest of your post is utter bunkum ! you would have us "hug a poacher" on the lines of Dave Camerons "hug a hoodie".

You would have us believe that this scum's history of poaching in the area should confer on him a right to poach there as if it was some sort of retrospective planning permission?....really?

There is no difference between this ***** poacher and a burgular or a car thief.

i dont mean to be rude but who cares if the lad has had the decent thing to tell you...if i broke into your house but told you first would that make it ok???...personally i would just report the lad to the police no pochers are "decent lads" thats why they do what they do in the middle of the night and do it illegally...in most cases its armed tresspass in persute of game...that is a criminal offence...and if he uses dogs its still a offence under the hunting with dogs act.. :/

first of all i have been shooting this land for 20 years and only i am aloud to shoot this land (if i want to bring other people to shoot thats fine with the farmer)and if someone else got perm to shoot that would be fine with me but this **** does not have and perm or ever had any if you had read the whole post?as for him being decent are you have in a laugh any one who does this sort of thing is no decent lad end of and we do worry about it who do we know if he,s not walking round the woods with a rifle as well (probably not i may add) do we only worry when some poor dog walker or one of the farmers kids takes a bullit it does,nt hurt one bit some one shooting game on this shoot one bit but it does when its illegall and as i said be for shooting is the dog is not an option now (for legall reasons)

Not a scumbag druggie, just a scumbag :P:good: Don't take offence mate, but you asked for that one

you cant tar everybody with the same brush cos they do a bit of poaching

Yes you can, they are all criminals.

Look, fair play, you've admitted to poaching, but don't expect to get a warm welcome for it. You've obviously seen the error of your ways, but yet you turn a blind eye to other doing it now ? Can't get my head round that one matey.

Oh, and try use paragraphs and punctuation - it makes things much easier to read  .

As for the OP:

1. Poaching is illegal

2. Running dogs on wildlife is illegal

I'd hand the whole thing over to the local Wildlife Crime Officer and let them sort it out.

yes mate running some wild life is illegal but rabbits arn't with dogs.like i said farmer have a right chew now to what they used to as its theiving ****s that get everybody a bad name.farmers have the right to be warey giving permission as they dont no you and vice verser.its when you get older you get wiser thats why i have plenty of permission but hands on heart i never stole from farmers and most time poaching in my eyes means stealth so you have been and gone with nobody knowing.but these days most of them deserve what they get as they drive around fields damaging everything in front of them and stealing what they can.
