I do indeed...

He is the friend I mentioned in one of the earlier posts, who's house I visited and ended up spending all morning there talking all things punt gunning and wildfowling. (He lives 2 mins round the corner!)

Hence my comments throughout about taking advice from people I respect, A LOT!

I look forward to meeting you next year!

Perhaps in 30 years time someone will be building a punt and referring to yourself in the same tone, and so it goes on. Long live tradition.

Hi Wildfowler

I have to chip in and say this has been a very entertaining read.

I'm waiting patiently to see a pic of the gun mounted on the punt and maybe even a vid of it being used in anger.

Hello,

Sorry for the delay in replying...

I've been working on getting the gun mounted today so hopefully it wont be long until I can get a picture up and maybe even a video!

Its been a while since I've had a chance to get anything done on the setup, due to one thing or another, coupled with the fowling season having started i've been spending most of my time on the saltings!

Anyway, following the testing, cleaning the barrel was a bit of a pain, I used boiling water to get rid of the black powder but didn't have a brush to push through the rags so i set about making the cleaning rod.

I made it from 3 hard wood handles joined by brass couples (machined by me)

I linished the wood back to smooth it into the couplers.

I need to get a stiffer brush but this one works ok for now

Last week I started making the gun crutch. This is the threaded rod that will hold the gun and make the height adjustable

The brass on the end is to hold it snug within the tube. The tube end is machined to accept a spigot on a thumb wheel

This is the thumb wheel being bored

And now screw cut to match the M20 threaded bar

here it is pretty much finished

This is how it will go...

The setup is mounted vertically, when the thumb wheel is turned it makes the threaded rod move up or down through the tube in turn raising or lowering the gun. The design should allow smooth operation with minimal fixings and obstruction to the opening under the foredeck.

I need to make a couple more small parts during the week, then i can mount it on the punt along with the gun!

Hi Wildfowler,

I love the bottle brush on your very smart looking cleaning rod  , beats the hell out of my drain rods!! I think you may find this page helpful http://www.ibhs.co.uk/Boiler-Tube-Cleaning-Equipment/Goodway-Boiler-Tube-Cleaning-Brushes/Brass-Brushes/p-106-248-681/

I didn't manage to get any more done last week ad was away all weekend for my sons birthday so this evening was the first opportunity I've had to get some more done.

I turned an end cap for the tube from stainless and machined out the end of the tube to make it a push fit. I punched 3 dents into the OD of the end cap to make it grip the tube and pushed it on.

I also made the clamp blocks. They're made from oak whilst the clamps are marine stainless.

This is it fitted...

Next i need to cut off the threaded bar and attach the gun crutch, then paint the blocks to match the punt...

Just joined forum so I can say well done your the man to put the great back in Britain best of luck with your book
