I note that nobody uses 7's, there is an argument that 28g 7's are the best option for the majority of pheasants, you get a lot more pellets in the target area than 6's. I know quite a few older and very experienced shots that use nothing else.

It's all good and well having a nice dense pattern, but if the shot doesn't carry sufficient energy at range, it won't penetrate and kill the quarry cleanly and efficiently.

It's no accident, that in over 100 years of shotgun shooting, specific loads for certain quarries have been settled upon....

Typically,

28g 7.5 for clays.

30-32g 6 for pigeons / small game.

30-32g + 5 - 4 for game.

As Iv said before, people only use clay loads for live quarry because they are cheap, or they do allot of clay shooting and can't be ***** to go and buy another slab of pigeon or game cartridges.

Couldn't agree more I would never dream of using clay carts for game especially pheasants.......

7's used to be pretty widely used for game in GAME loads, on a mixed driven day especially through game guns with tight chokes you might be surprised how well they work. As ever its the bloke behind the trigger, when you see someone really good with a .410 it shows how heavy loads and large shot size are usually to account for the inadequacies of the shooter
