scobydog
Well, just got the wifes car back from Toyota, after dishing out the thick end of a grand to have a new egr unit and valves done, the reason for them getting damaged and stopping working was buying diesel from the supermarket forecourt. Head technician advised us to only use fuel from main agent garages as it is of a much higher quality and doesn't have loads of unprocessed carbon in it, he said s/market fuel is c**p, and they are seeing more and more cars coming in with this problem. Has anyone on here had a similar prob, and also just a warning for others with high performance diesel engines .
karpman
Yep see it from time to time certain engines seem to hate it. Always thought it was because they water it down with sugar beet extract or summat like that. Karpman
washerboy
try not to use it,you get less mpg, its **** Edited November 10, 2012 by washerboy
philm
I worked near a bp terminal, all different company tankers were filling from same tanks! I asked what the difference was, they said it was the additives. The different companies paid for the extra amount of additives to be added. HDAV
Odd as all fuel has to meet BS EN standard I would say its down to manufacturers not building them for the appropriate markets at most they will test engine designs long term on various fuel grades and specs. Perhaps I have been fortunate I do notice better range using some fuels morrisons seems the worst esso better but mainly use fuel from tesco/asda/ sainsbury
clakk
my volvo had a spasm on" jets" petrol had to drain the tank and replace the filter but im a sainsburys regular and touchwood no probs its 9 year old 2ltr petrol.

39TDS
Most cars I have had hate BP petrol. Tesco fuel seems OK to me. I usually put Vpower in, the other day I accidentally put Vpower diesel in. It didn't like that very much. :( Edited November 10, 2012 by 39TDS
beeredup
Yeah my Jetta don't like morrisons diesel it's sluggish on it then again it don't like shells petrol either as the wife found out to her terror a while ago
reddan
There was a load of complaints about it a few years ago where a lot of new cars were breaking down due to the o2 sensor going i think. They put that down to supermarket fuel. I always go to the mainstream garage that is across the road from ASDA as it competes ont he price but is probably better fuel. harrycatcat1
Is there any evidence to support these theories or is it all hearsay? This crops up time after time. Regards Hcc
lxtav
No evidence at all as all the fuel in an area comes from the same refinery irrespective of who sells it. Some companies put some additives in but most dont so all the fuel in an area is the same. My dad worked for Bp and refined the fuel so he should know. Marine1980
Warranties can be void if you have engine problems due to rubbish fuel as tesco, morrisons Etc arnt seen as proper petrol station! I only ever run my bike on optimax! More expensive but I get more mpg so it works out similar in the long run! Royal

Fuddster
my toyota landcruiser blew its fuel pump last year at a recon cost of £1000-the diesel specialist blamed supermarket fuel as having too high a water content-since then its strictly non supermarket fuel for it. saying that I have a toyota corolla as my daily mileage car-its a 1.8 petrol and pretty much lives on tesco's unleaded-if it went bang i probably wouldnt spend alot to repair it. fuel for thought! fudd
Del T
The petrol isn't too bad from supermarkets its the diesel that can wreck some certain diesel pumps.Something to do with the lubrication of the fuel. Stick to good quality diesel fuels. I wish I could use the cheaper petrol but my cars been mapped to run on shell v power(or todays equivalent) it will run others but gets high knock counts so that's no good for the engine. Paladin
Supermarket fuel. Mine gets treated to Wing Yip's supermarket, their rapeseed oil at well less than £20 a drum. Glug glug.
