I really do feel sorry for the guy but any serving soldier knows if you bring souvenirs back you risk the chance of getting caught no matter where you got it from!

As it says in the article he only had memory problems etc after he brought it back in the country!

It's not a cut and dry case and I feel remorse for the family but I can't see how he wasn't going to get in trouble! Only my 10 pence worth.

If you read it again, he didn't bring it back, he left it there whilst he brought his two mate back in coffins. It was packed away by other members and sent back to Hereford, where it stayed for a few years. Before he took his gear back home.

If you read it again he had planed to bring it back anyway to get it framed so the fact his mates packed it has no relevance as it was coming back to The uk anyway!

He had brain damage, and this caused memory loss. It is competely possible that he forgot about it. And then there's the fact that his family have suffered as well.

"He intended to have it decommissioned and hung on the SAS sergeants’ mess wall as a war trophy, alongside dozens of others amassed by the regiment in operations."
