Who's had a Prostate examination?

I have Bladder Cancer, for the checks for that they do the 'finger test", in case it is actually the prostate, followed by an ultrasound if they aren't sure, and if they really want to be thorough, they will do a Cystoscopy ( camera catheter up the old 'pipe') none of them painful, uncomfortable at the most. Get it done, if I hadn't I wouldn't be here now, it's only a bit of embarrassment, but believe me, the nurses and doctors see it all day and it doesn't bother them!

Of course, if your nickname is "Horse", they might raise an eyebrow.... :)

47 and had the prostate check. It wasn't pleasant, but the Doc said I'd be kicking a bit more if it was enlarged.

I'd actually gone in because my back had gone into spasm and taken my bladder out of action :sad1:. I still ended up in hospital with a catheter up my pipe until I could pee again - not a good day that  .

The older you get, the less you care about what people think. If you've got any doubts, get yourself checked out in whatever trouser department is affected

I had a scan of couple of years ago and there was a shadow on the prostate which could have been cancer or just an infection, and I had a higher than normal PSA reading. Since then I've had a biopsy every six months and nothing cancerous has shown up. My PSA count last week was 25 but following an examination it was decided that I must have an infection so I'm on anti-biotics for a month.

The biopsy is uncomfortable but only lasts a few minutes. You're lying on your side with your knees high up on your chest while someone who you can't see is doing something where the sun doesn't shine and there's usually some well padded nurse holding your shoulders down and asking "Are you going anywhere nice for holiday this year?" It's all a bit surreal!

Prostate cancer is one of the main killers of men but if caught early can almost always be successfully treated. Don't delay, ask your GP for a PSA blood test.

Well I've had the lot done & BLOODY glad I did.

In August last year I was told those dreaded words you have PROSTEATE CANCER. Hang-On a min I'm fit & well never at the doc's why me!!! On October 21 I had 'Robotic Prostatectomy' where robots cut it out, in hos at 7am back home 6pm next day. 5.5h on the table & 2 months recovery time so missed loads of shooting. Back with the gun just after Xmas.

So, I have learned so much about PCa & what really worries me is there are so many fit & healthy men going about there life who HAVE PROSTRATE CANCER & do NOT know it. They only go to the Quacks when they have to, back ache etc is a symptom, but by then it can be to late, it gets into the blood, bones etc then the writings on the wall

So please if YOU are in your 50's the next time your at the quacks get your PSA checked. ( Prostate Specific Antigen blood test) ITS YOUR WRITE SO DEMARNED IT. It gets a number on paper so when you have it done a year or so later you can see if its rising. Mine was 1st done when I was 55 & my count gradually rose to 4.8 then dropped back to 3.2 then Oct 2012 had risen to 5.3 the day of the op( when I was 59). The PSA is just a number & DOES NOT MEAN YOU HAVE PCa. I know a few men with a PSA of 100+ but DONOT have PCa, so PSA is not the B-all of Cancer, its the best indicator we have today

Doc said back in August, said leave it for 3 months & we will do the PSA again that's when I said NO I want to be referred. The rest is history & I owed it to the family.

Since my op I have to go back to Addenbrookes Hos every 3months for a Super Sensitive PSA check which today is 0.02 which is unreadable. Do this for 5 years & as long as PSA stays at this level they declare you Cancer FREE. Fingers crossed.

As for symptom's well VERY FEW, getting up for a pee a few times a night ( that what you do when you've had a beer or 3 isn't it??) NO another tick in the box. Having a pee then a hour later having another ( I thought it was an old man thing!) another tick in the box. PSA rising, another tick.

ALL men have PROSTRATE CANCER its whether it develops or not. I was one of the LUCKY ones I got it EARLY & when they did a biopsy on my prostrate they found 35% of it was cancer.

The surgeon said I may only have lasted another 5 years it can be as quick as that if you don't catch it early. Well it can't back because the prostate is in some Hospital office bin & am still alive

PROSTATE CANCER IS MENS BIGGEST KILLER

(if I can help anybody with any worries or questions PLEASE ASK as i have the T shirt)

Here I am 5 months on, 98% back to as was & life's great! It sharpens the mind when you've looked down the barrel's of a Cancer gun.

I was told by my G.P.that there are different Prostate cancers and the PSA will not reveal a particular form of cancer that is quite aggressive, so as part of my Wellman I had the examination. There are three main GPs at my surgery, my GP just happens to be 6'04" with hands like a farmer, but as has been said momentary discomfort for the reassurance that you are okay. Prostate cancer diagnosed early is manageable and not a killer. If you're in your 50s, or have family history get it done.
