gemini52
Had a new garden fence put up today by a local company,it looks fine it was done in a day all the rubbish taken away, the neighbor had agreed to go half with the cost,i paid them when it was finnished got the bill and my wife knocked on there door with the bill to show them how much i had paid, thats when things took a, turn for the worse, the fence looks fine she said but why have they cut back all my rose bushes at the top of my garden,i had been at work all day so when i got home they were almost done, she rang the company but they had all gone home to say she was ****** off was a understatement, the thing is unless she gets some come back i cant see me getting halve the cost, its put me in differcult situation,i looked over the fence and to be fair to her they had gone bit over the top with the loppers, they never were the best neighbors so looks like were at war again Edited May 13, 2013 by gemini52
station
Neighbours and Family - never a truer word ! I'd speak with the guys that did it personally, and explain what's at stake. Hope it gets sorted for you as it Is always a risk when you fork out money and have to get part of it back off others. ATB
bruno22rf
Surely you have honoured your part of the deal so now the ball is in her court.A verbal contract is as good as a written one so long as you have a witness?Make your payment to the fencing company and let them sort her out-the dispute is between them. shoot and be safe
I always thought that a good hard prune of a rose bush did it the world of good, and you get a better show of blooms. I may be wrong If they don't pay their share, paint it a colour that they won't like
FalconFN
Normally you are only legally resonable for the fence one side of your garden so if it is your the side you are responsible for you may have a problem. Saying that, if she agreed then she should pay for the work and speak to the fencing company about the roses and not you.
browning n spaniel
silly to argue over fencing and rose bushes.. if you and them fall out it may be like a thorn in your side
station
But that wont bring the rose bushes back! As someone else has said - they might buy her some new ones ! Anyhow don't most of us prefer a well trimmed bush.

gemini52
The boss of the fencing company called tonite, the upshot is he has agreed to plant some bushes to fill the gaps so fingers crossed they will cough up,if not i will have to incur the wrath of the gods
flynny
If you plan on going halves with anyone for anything, show them the quote and tell them you will get it started as soon as you both have the money for the works. Get the money of the other party first mate. I know you shouldnt have to for a mutual arrangement with a neighbour but hey ho such is life, in this day and age TRUST NO ONE ha,ha ATB Flynny
Dekers
I have always been fortunate enough to have good neighbours in all ways except when it comes to putting their hands in their pocket for joint repairs! I'm curious here though, most Fences belong to one party or the other, very few are actually shared, who owns this fence/boundary?
jonesbach
Always been told the fence/boundary to the left of the property as you look at it from the front belongs to you...?! Does anyone know for sure?! Never actually seen written evidence of any 'law'.
Penelope
I think that is standard practice. hawkeye
Well i was told just a few weeks ago that the fence on my right was mine as i looked at it from the front..
shoot and be safe
It all depends on what it says on your deeds. However it is usually down to who has the better side of the fence, ie. if a wooden pannal, who has the straight side rather than the cross member side. Dekers
It tends to be the Majority that are left, but then what about the bottom of the garden and the one on the right if you are at the end of a close/cul de sac with no neighbour there. Simple fact is, it is what your Deeds say!
bazzashadow
i live in a council house and we had neighbours saying the fence was ours rung the council and they sent a letter out saying it was the neighbours never heard anymore and fence is still standing 5 years on and it is a back fence on the left of our house facing the front
Mikaveli
I'd also have thought the ownership of the fence would be in the deeds. I have to maintain the one one the right, my other neighbour does the left. Theirs is cheap quality though - but better than me paying for it. gemini52
Result, the neighbor just knocked on the door and gave me 320 quid towards the cost of the fence, not exactly half but like they say half a loaf is better then none
