I took a novice out today.

This gentleman has been so patient. He has wanted to come out with me for two years now and today was his turn. It was to be decoying over a rape stubble on land I have just gained due to the previous shooter leaving both fresh pigeons and cartridges in the hedge.

We met at 1pm and things went downhill for half an hour or so when I discovered that his magnet did not work and that his stealth net was completely see through. It was hot and his bare arms were clearly visible to me in another hide 50m away. I couldn't solve the rotary problem other than to move mine closer to him and I did solve the net problem by draping one of mine over his hide poles.

There were a lot of pigeons using the fields and I chose to have the wind at our back and the intermittent sun in our faces. This was a good compromise. The lack of experience showed up (his not mine) in the form of shots being taken too far out (60m) until I had a word, and not letting passing birds have a chance to turn with the wind and decoy properly. He got the hang of it eventually and he contributed 23 birds to the bag of 127. I had to tell him at the end that not all pigeon shooting days would be as good just in case he got the wrong impression.
