Had a Skoda Estelle in the early nineties. One of the most comfortable cars I've driven.

Changed the clocks to full on race set.

Only took 15 mins to take engine out, very easy to work on which was just as well as the head kept cracking.

Bit lively in the wet with engine out back

Had loads of cars when younger in first few years of driving, my son would love the cars I've had. mk11 escorts. Mk1 Scirrocco, chevette Blackwatch looked the mutts at the time, a little pocket rocket in the day was the Citroen Visa. Audi Coupe 2.3 5cyl sounded lush. Had all the usual stuff cortinas, fiestas, mini , Renault , Capri never did it for me. The 1970s s111 land rover I had was great but very thirsty. Had too many cars as my dad used to do accident damaged cars back then and I used to do stolen recovered ones. Some good ones and some howlers remember the Austin Ambassador

Some I would like now, but then I think of the breakdowns and parts.

I had a few Capris culminating in a modded 2.8i, straight cut gearbox, locking diff, bored out to 3.2 and custom injectors and chip...dropped 2" all round and on adjustable gas struts.

Bloody mods came in at more than the car, it did bloody go though and even went round corners.....relatively well! Also has a Vauxhall Firenza droop snoot, quirky old beast that was!

Another early monstrosity I had a soft spot was the Austin Princess, now there's a classy motor!

I had a firenza or a viva coupe I think was its other name

I almost bought a Clan Crusader a couple of years back, quite liked the look of those.

Never seen one on the road though.

Not bad cars, all the Imp engined cars were very competative in the smaller engine classes when I was hillclimbing/sprinting, Davrian's were also popular

The avenger was the "Tiger" it was Hillmans version of the escort Mexico.

That's a great shout, I was digging back in my memory for that one :good:

The Ambassador I had was OK - It was a company car that I had passed on to me whilst I was waiting for a new 1.6 Astra, and I was pleasantly surprised by its performance, handling and load carrying ability.

In fact I passed it on to my father-in-law, a previously die-hard Ford owner, who thought that it was one of the nicest cars that he had driven.

Maybe mine was one of the few good ones that had escaped from Longbridge

Wasn't the original Sunbeam Tiger a V8 Alpine?

Another quick car i had a drive of that looked pants was the Talbot Solara Rapier.

A few wolves in sheeps clothing back then.

Never been a big fast Ford fan after the mk2 Escorts,xr3 and rs turbos were not my bag.

Love the Spitfire and Stag, especially that v8 burble.

One of the best threads for a while.

I also had a Mini clubman estate, which I had fitted with a stage 2 cylinder head and twin Strombergs. Was a wolf in sheep's clothing, and would leave for dead Xr2s at the traffic lights. Great fun... Fully stripped the car to the bare body shell, replaced all rotten panels, sub-frames etc., and it was re-sprayed with Crown red gloss... Then fully rebuilt.

Aha...but years ago when one was a mere slip of a lad and ones Mater and Pater had several automobiles.....one of the aforementioned horseless carriages was a Vanden Plas Princess, a truly majestic and noble beast with a Rolls Royce engine, not to be confused with the peasants transport to which you allude in your post.

My first two cars were Ford Zodiac's - Mk2 and Mk 3 -- My motoring went down hill then - Had LHD 2CV - A citroen Amy super8 - Daff 44 estate - Yugo 55 - Fiat Panda with twin sunroof along with rust. Nova - A horrible green Mazda 323. - Things got better then

My Mk3 Zodiac Exec lasted 8 yrs from factory floor to scrap heap due to total body rot.

Of all those cars I wouldn't mind another Daff 44 - went very well. A12v one though

Owned a couple of Maxis - long time ago. They were way ahead of their time:-

Overhead cam, hatchback, transverse engine, hydro-lastic suspension, 5 speed box etc.

They were a pain in the backside ... Served my time on Austins .... Cable gear change (Changed to Rod ) ( Oil seal would leak ). .... First and second gear selector fork kept wearing out. After many attempts to cure the problem one of which used to catch on the inside body of the gearbox. They coated the sides of the fork with Moly slip type paint.
