chrisjpainter
is anyone else slightly embarrassed about the kerfuffle over this spider? how long would Australia's education system last if they closed down every time a mildly nasty thing idled its way into a school? we have totally lost our backbone! what would the victorian exploring generation have thought of how pathetic we can be sometimes! http://www.bbc.co.uk/news/uk-england-gloucestershire-24623652
chrisjh
could be an opportunity here with the lack of pigeons & crows available taking a few false black widows out might endear us to the general public
paul65
I've had loads of these in my house over the last few years. Never been a problem. On the other hand I got bitten by a ladybird last week. Walking home from work and felt a sharp sting on my finger, looked down and there was a ladybird, when I shook it off there was a red mark where it had 'savaged' me. Dominicrobed
We have had them at ours for a while now. Even fed one the odd fly. No one has died from a bite from one but how many have died from bee / wasp stings ? If they want a real spider they should meet my king baboon very evil it even hisses when peed off

rimfire4969
To rock the boat slightly, they were just closing one area where there was an infestation. They then went on and discovered other groups of spiders in different areas. If they are spraying poisons in the school not sure I would want my kids there. bruno22rf
Odd -ICT suites are normally kept cold-ours is by far the coldest room in the school. The most likely reason for closing the school would be the "duty of care"-if a child was bitten and suffered a reaction then the school,. knowing that the spiders were present, would be liable. neil3728
Never seen one, didn't even realise we had anything like that until a few weeks ago. Must admit if they were using any poison of any type in my daughters school I would want it shut for the kids safety.

I am with you on this they did say on the radio that they closed the school as the pest people would be using poisons to kill the spiders. poppythedog
Australia would have to shut down if they flapped at the sight of anything remotely dangerous http://www.australiangeographic.com.au/journal/top-30-deadly-animals-in-australia.htm

chrisjpainter
For a summer between uni degrees, I worked on a wildlife sanctuary/reserve in Namibia. they also ran school for the local bush kids. here are just some of the nasties they would walk past and were on the reserve's grounds: black widows, black mambas, puff adders, Spitting cobras, cape cobras, horned adders and various scorpions That's excluding things like leopards and baboons and the like. you get a safety briefing when you arrive, then carry on as normal! I fear the guys would laugh at me if I told them what happened here...
digger
Im an arachnaphobe, to the level where the guys I work with know if its bigger than my thumb nail Im walking away from that area til its dealt with. I have flattened a guy who threw a large spider at me knowing my girly fear. One punch and hes never done it since. Guess its not manly to admit it ? Had rats crawl over me when doing confined spaces, not a problem. Yet a spider freaks the hell out of me.
Fisherman Mike
Those poor spiders... if they realised the danger they were in from the inbreds in the forest they would be out of Lydney and across the Severn estuary pretty damn quick Theys queer down thur reely queer.... Munzy
One dropped out of my two year old's shoe when I was getting him ready for nursery this morning. Ran across the duvet towards my wife! Luckily he was wriggling about as usual otherwise I could so easily have jammed his foot into the shoe resulting in a bite. Tomcantwell
Oi mike! Haha That school is round the corner from my house, the car park was full of news crews yesterday. All the locals round here think its ridiculous. Suppose it's health and safety gone mad.
