four-wheel-drive
That was on the news weeks ago good thing as well I think I think that they should also do away with the front number plate as with bikes as they do not look good on some cars. shootgun
this is what is says on gov.uk : ''DVLA will offer motorists the ability to spread their vehicle tax payments should they wish to do so. From 1 October 2014 motorists will be able to pay vehicle tax by direct debit annually, biannually or monthly. There will be no additional handling fees for annual payments but to limit the impact on the public finances there will be a small surcharge of 5% of vehicle tax for biannual and monthly payments. This is half of the 10% surcharge that is currently applied to 6 monthly tax discs and which has been in existence for a number of decades. Also from 1 October 2014, the paper tax disc, first issued on 1 January 1921, will no longer be issued and required to be displayed on a vehicle windscreen. Vehicle tax will still need to be paid but with DVLA having a digital record of who has and has not paid, a paper tax disc is no longer necessary as proof that vehicle tax is paid''
Malik
Sounds like they are keeping up with the times. Im sure a lot of people will still pay 12 months upfront though I second that front numberplate comment said above.

kdubya
do away with tax dice, and put it on petrol that way we all pay, nope that means high mileage drivers pay more and for what? it doesn't go back into the road network does it, plus at the minute you need a valid MOT and insurance to tax a vehicle, with tax simply paid at the pump a lot more simply wont bother with that little chore. And I could argue that if you are paying over 200 and only do 2000 then you are in the wrong type of vehicle but I wont as its your choice, same as its mine to do lord knows how many miles I want on my road fund licence, in fact more so considering I pay considerably more in fuel duty than you now due to the mileage I cover or did that fact conveniently slip your mind? evo
cant get rid of front number plates, how else would the police catch all the boy racers when looking through their radar guns, would they just let them go flying past then try and take their number, as the above post states their is no need to have a tax disk showing because the police know everything about our vehicles, tax insurance etc, and lets not forget we are being watched 24hrs a day atb Evo
bazzab
How will they police this? I presume that the police will have access to the list of taxed vehicles? More to the point DVLA will have to keep it bang up to date. Cos they dont at the min.
norfolk dumpling
When they zap your no plate into their system (either by phoning control or by the roadside gun) they know if you are taxed, mot'd and insured. They may even know if you have a gun licence - it's all on their little computer.

I was pulled on the M27 earlier in the year by an unmarked but ANPR equipped traffic copper. He told me that the vehicle appeared to be uninsured, it turned out to be case of data input error at the insurance company, the registration was one digit out. Corrected there and then and I went on my way. It transpired that two months later, when the tax ran out and I tried to do an online renewal, that the MOT had run out three months prior. My fault for not checking but I was under the impression that it had 10 months tax when I bought it which was longer than the tax so....I didn't check it, immaterial I know, but....surely the copper should have known that when he pulled me for no tax? bazzab
ANPR. They already have these cameras at various locations throughout the UK and will simply install more. That wont be any good without DVLA doing there bit. Plus the ANPR will have to be constantly monitored or have some sort of system to monitor automatically and send fines etc through the post. The police wont have the resources to re-act to hits. Another load of poop so far.

Lord Geordie
Hmm. Cut backs, No more admin for disc's, all computerised! So a big saving in all! Are AE to have these savings passed down to the end user? I think it's high time the revenue made from motorists, was spent SOLELY on our roads each year! IF there is any residual money left over, THEN it can be used elsewhere! The state of our MAIN roads in the UK is appauling. Let alone the side streets. If they had used all the tarmac they squandered making a rash of SPEED HUMPS up and down the country, on repairing the road instead! We would be sitting pretty. The removal of tax disc's will lead to MORE number plate thefts, and cloning in my view! Also, will the new system allow a user to use his "or her" car for one month of the year only? Buy a months road tax, and no other? So if they want to use the car for one month only they could budget for it? Will have to keep hold of my tax disc's then. They may become collectable
Cannon
I'll second that about the condition of the roads. Got a cracked alloy courtesy of them recently. I'll be glad to see the tax disc going. One less windscreen obstruction
