mossberg-operator
Question: been out today. Seen a feral dog. If a dog attacks me on the field, what can I do? Got permission for that land. If I shot the dog, what is procedure? Should I alert my FEO? Dog just left, so nothing happened. Just like to know what should I do if... strangford wildfowler
what does a feral dog look like +1 I've never seen nor heard of a feral dog, I'm curios to where this goes? And are you sure it wasn't just a lost dog?
jimmyb79
And me, I didn't think we had feral dogs in the UK. Possibly a lost or stolen dog?
Cranfield
I would strongly suggest the dog is either lost, or has been dumped, in which case inform the local Council Dog Warden, or the Police. If its of the "long" variety, it may well have been left/lost by coursers and they will probably be back to collect it. We saw two groups out coursing on New Years Day. Whatever you do, don't shoot it, unless you have proof your life was threatened.
al4x
Why should it attack you? If it's a dumped long dog then the solution involves a shovel and some exercise

mossberg-operator
Calm done guys! So, if a "dog of any kind without owner present" instead of feral. Ok? Been attacked by dog before, just cycling, no provocation, still got the scars on my leg, so I think I have the right to ask the question. Trying to find out what to do if... Rst1990
The only time you can shoot a dog legally is if it is chasing, killing , maiming etc live stock. If you do shoot and kill the dog and it has not been involved in any livestock you will get charged for criminal damage. Easiest thing to do is call the dog warden or RSPCA
paul2012
Says on my certificate something along the lines of, For use of the killing of any animal in the protection of human or livestock life, don't quote me exactly as i don't have my ticket with me. So my interpretation is that if i saw the dog either attacking livestock or threating to attack me then I could shoot it and dispose of it in the normal way. I am not saying you should shoot it on sight or go hunting it but shoot it within the situations as outlined on your ticket
Grandalf
Feral Wild, especially after domestication, or resembling a wild animal. (Oxford ENGLISH Dictionary) I think you saw a stray. Phone police or ask around. Someone is probably looking for it if it hasn't gone home of its own accord. What ever you do don't shoot it. See a stray on my bit nearly every day. Pity - but not the dog's fault. Some people's idea of dog walking is to open the back door...

If the dog had attacked you or you were in fear of injury and you shot the dog you would be able to use the same defense in court that a farmer would use for shooting a dog worrying stock. It is a criminal offense to kill a dog. However, if and when you are charged for criminal damage you would be able to use the mitigating circumstances in your defense. You would need to be able to prove beyond doubt your actions were justified in a court of law.
Luckyshot
If a dog feral or not was to attack me whilst out shooting I would shoot it regardless, my life is worth alot more than my fac/sgc hope it will never happen though. I'm not really shore haven't been in that situation. In the paper I read that a guy stabbed a staff to death as it was attacking his dog, the guy got arrested for criminal damage and had to pay £100 fine. DTS
maybe a warning shot might perhaps scare it away, avoiding any issues with legalities of whether you should have shot it or not?
Muddy Funker
lol So best not shoot it then if it attacks you, just let it kill you because it's not conditioned on your cert If it's worrying a sheep though you'll be okay.
