theshootist
I have used most types of fowling guns over the years.......single 4, double 8, S/A 10, S/A 12 (Browning, Beretta etc), double SBS 12,....got shut of all the S/A's now....for a variety of reasons but mainly because I couldn't shoot well with em (bar the Browning Gold 3 1/2" S/A 12 that is!) and safety wise...... you can't at a glance check down the barrel for obstructions, and because S/A's don't break so others cannot easily see the gun is empty!........... and annoying wise..... the empties were scattered over a wide area (and when picked up, were often contaminated with mud and salt water and rusted before you got home!......not good for reloading)........ and of course the empty cases are impossible to find in the dark! I currently use a12 x 3 1/2" O/U (and of course the 4 & 8 Bores!) early days with it yet, but the O/U 12 appears to tick most boxes for me............but if all else fails I still have my Midland 3" mag SBS 12 as a fall back...... Oh and the gun is finished in 'Duratouch' infinity camo.....so rust is not an issue! To remove rust (redrust!) I have used cabinet makers wirewool in 0000grade (I think it is?) soaked in paraffin/oil to good effect, without it removing the Blacking....but don't rub too hard/long!! Hi Panoma1, Is there any chance that you could put up some photos of your 4 and 8 bores? I for one would be really interested to see them! My 8 bore is just a bored out spanish 10. Its brutal at both ends! Thanks
muncher
If you're not into s/a guns, the old browning 425 wildfowl would probably a nice gun for the foreshore. Anyone tried it?Yes ive got one very worn great gun only fault is the chambers aren't chromed or the trigger guard top tang .good weight just over 8 pounds
Tim2681
I also have a browning 425 waterfowl. I shoot from a boat in poole harbour using steel cartridges and never felt under gunned. It's easier to switch cartridges out if you hear geese that never come. I do laugh while I watch my mate cycle his S/A to change cartridges. henry d
Semi auto, had an 11-87 and only changed to an Xtrema when the 3 1/2" chambered semis became popular and the cartridges became more readily available.
poontang
Browning 425 waterfowl. Great gun, only problem is, as muncher mentioned, the trigger guard, top tang and forend release catch tend to rust. Never really bothered me though..I don't treat it particularly well but it's never lets me down.
Konnie
s/a all the way on the foreshore wore out a browning gold excellent bit of kit, now on xtrema only cos I got it at a good price. then they brought out maxus, which I think has same speed loading as the old browning gold very handy for quick loading & when its dark. Konnie
forgot to mention both resemble railway tracks, covered in rust but its mud and water where the ducks live, if your kits clean your not far enough out !!!

Big Mat
My Remington versamax has made it through its first season with no rust There is still 15 days left to get it rusty!
scolopax
I used a Browning 425 Waterfowl for years, then got an SX3, so 'had' to tick the auto box. But I will probably go back to the Browning next season, mainly because I shoot better with it, but also because changing over between goose and duck loads is so much easier. Also an O/U will never jam! I am pondering on getting a new Waterfowl for my game shooting and keeping my old, rusty, scarred and dinted Waterfowl for the foreshore. bullet boy
My Winchester SX3 I believe is an excellent Wildfowling gun cos it can use Steel Shot and has the 3 1/2 chamber to take big Cartridges.
