The Essex Hunter
There is never a perfect plan and to day was no exception…I can’t drive the edges of the land I shoot due to the steward ship scheme, however with no crops showing using my little 2 wheel drive quad was fine until it decided to play up!! So we had to walk up a very steep hill with all the kit around 400 yards at a rough guess. After spending half and hour clapping the birds off we finally sat down swigged some tea and set the kit up. Plenty of birds in the area but a 90 acre field is very hard to stop them dropping in places where you don’t want them. These birds come out of a town and with the NW wind it would have been very tempting to set up with it on our back and decoy them. With such a good line I didn’t want to blow them back to the town, so we shot across the wind. Olly questioned this method; I pointed a group of 15/20 coming up the line around ¼ of a mile away and shooting straight at them to see them turn back to the town. We loaded up the pattern which did seem to create a good draw. The noise from the shooting did keep the birds on the move, but twice we had to walk a few hundred yards and get them out of a spot by a foot path which I didn’t want to shoot near. Olly was quite rusty with not shooting since December; however I was quite sharp with 11pairs in my tally of 121. I rang the contract farmer and he said it was ok to drive the tram lines and load up the kit as he very happy with the bag. Picked up 147 and lost 7. My Cocker pup has had the hump all day but seemed quite happy when I came home!! http://s856.photobucket.com/user/TheEssexHunter/media/Essex%20Decoy%20Springs/002_zps524f658c.mp4.html TEH Edited April 14, 2014 by The Essex Hunter

Penelope
Are you sure they are maples? Look like Tic Beans to me. Maples are dark'ish brown with a lighter marbling. Used them a lot for carp fishing. Tic bean. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=tic+bean+picture&id=6760A542CA4C0618BFEB78513CFB0E43EC8094C5&FORM=IQFRBA Maple pea. http://www.bing.com/images/search?q=maple+pea+picture&qpvt=maple+pea+picture&FORM=IGRE#view=detail&id=8D53ADC47F7B7E7C99C1EEBFF8570426C8E43301&selectedIndex=1 Damn good bag of pigeons though. There are 5 drilled fields about a mile from the one I was on and some birds were coming from that direction, so the one in the picture might have come from there. tjm160
Cracking write up and superb pictures Tim, hearty congrats on a very well thought out result. I've learned a lot from that, Crumbs, stopping shooting and walking across the field to put the birds off, that's some discipline.
