la bala
I would think there will be some laid barley about now, we must have had an inch of rain last night in our area.
Fuddster
i was out yesterday on laid barley-top end of north yorkshire. I had met the farmer on a beaters day I guested on-he was pulling his hair out at the amount of corvids on the crop. got there for 0630 and about 50 lifted. shot 46 but saw only a dozen or so woodies all day-strange how some parts have more of one than the other. debating another early start tomorrow. f. lakeside1000
We've barely had a shower here in east Norfolk, very little crop damage, a couple of wheat fields near Stalham look bad but most of the barley is fine, on one perm the rooks are working a small patch in the barley and its growing by the day, problem is every time I go to shoot it they clear off and don't come back, but we have some small groups of pigeons working the beet fields so I'm staying on them until harvest time, but I always put a few rook decoys out just in case one drifts into range, at least the ground is dry and in most places is good easy walking, especially as I drag a trolley full of stuff every time I go out, well we don't want to be caught under equipped

Konnie
Got pigeons on one bit of mine only in tram lines but several, crop is a new seed variety and that thick I would do more damage shooting than the birds are at the moment Huh 8mm rain last night here. motty
I've seen plenty of pigeons going into standing barley. I won't shoot it as I hate not picking birds.

Penelope
A very good attitude motty. There are a lot of pigeons on the peas and spring rape on the syndicate that I am in, but I have no outlet for them so won't shoot. I've seen plenty of pigeons going into standing barley. Local hotels restaurants even some butchers all will take fresh shot pigeon, just takes a bit of time to build up a few clients. Alternatively a very large freezer (mine holds 300 odd) and a call to the game dealer when near full works well. PS Peterborough game co phoned me for pigeon last week and came next day and took all I had, first time that has happened. And 40p each for the last lot, ho happy days. Penelope
Trouble is, I don't have the facility to old them for any length of time, even overnight really and out at work Mon.-Fri. The place that I have been taking them to is very convenient, it's on the way home from the shoot, well almost, and the chiller is open and accessible 24/7, so I can shoot them during the day and they will be in the chiller within half an hour or so of puling off the field. 25p a bird, but that is a secondary consideration to seeing them being used. ditchman
actually starting to see a few birds about now, and several birds on the side of the road pecking at grit...!
JDog
Gritting often indicates a change of diet to grain. There is less need for pigeons to take grit onboard when they are having exclusively vegetative food like clover or rape leaves.

They must have had a big order come in as they phoned me too and they had only had a freezer full a week or so before.
