A day on the Jackdaws.

After my overtime shift at work was cancelled today, I took advantage of the weather, and the fact that my good mate, Mark (the poacher) was going up the farm for a bit of shooting, and decided to go up with him. We met by the farm at 10am and by 10.30am, after putting out around 20 decoys, we were set up and ready for some action. That did'nt take long, and within five minutes, we had shot four Jackdaws. A few more came into our decoys, and they were also shot. We had a lull of about half an hour, and could'nt work out why. Mark went down to the edge of the field, which drops over a steep banking. He could see around 40 jackdaws on the bank. They could not see our decoys, so we decided to put the flapper right by the fence line. Birds soon came up to see it, but hovered above it because it looked as if the bird on the flapper was tangled in the fence. The birds were too far away for us to shoot, so we moved the flapper again, nearer to our decoys.

We had birds coming in, in two's and three's, and it was hard work getting them close enough. Many times, by using my Primos Power Crow caller, it attracted them within range. We shot some more, and then we said, 'give it another half hour and we'll pack up'. This was around 3pm. Well, we shot a few more birds, and said 'give it another half hour' a few times more. We finally called it at day at 5.30pm, and our total bag was 37 Jackdaws with 36 picked up. Quite a few of the birds were testing shots, and we only missed 7 in total.

The photo shows our end result. My thanks as always to Mark for a really good day out, and a good laugh along the way. :good:

Great bag ad nice pic! (ps what was that action camera you recommended on here?)

Thanks in advance,

The one I recommended is the Action Cam #3 720P HD, I believe, but there are better ones out now for around the same money.

Well done lads a decent bag between the pair of you. Whats the guns they look a nice pair

The shotguns are Escort magnums. Marks is the standard 3 shot, and mine is an FAC version, which started off as 5 shot, and then I converted it to an 8 shot. I have only ever fired the 8 shots for demonstration purposes though. Usually, it's 3, maybe 4 maximum.

A good bag , though I shoot them with a smile on my face I find them comical little birds to watch at times.

A couple of years ago I had one land about 4ft out from the hide when pigeon shooting , it kept feeding while I shot at least 3 or 4 pigeon that came into the pattern !

When it eventually got up I did not have the heart to shoot it .

To be honest, I would swop 10 Jackdaws for 1 Crow, as I hate them with a vengeance.

How do you find the escorts as they get a lot of bad press? I am getting myself a 3inch magnum for on the marsh when the season starts

The earlier models were not good, but the later models are much better. I've had mine for 5 years and it's been trouble free. My mate who shot with me today will verify how good they are. He's had his for 2+ years with no issues.
