Rst1990
Put my fac variation in to get a .22lr got the interview set for Monday. Been looking on various Internet forums including this site on information about the .22lr, and there is a lot of feed back on ricochet problems with the round, it's kind of putting me off getting one as I don't really want something that dangerous. Gets me thinking of how many .22 rimmies are out there and people using them as they seem to be very popular. What are your thoughts on the said rifle? team tractor
All bullets ricochet if you shoot like a ****. Just pick your shots . I shoot 80% into a bank and it's perfectly safe
kent
Its the most useful rifle on the planet and has been for over 100 years. Ricochets? Every round ricochets the trick is to ***** the shot correctly its needs the same consideration that a HMR does, i feel those that sat HMR don't ricochet are lacking experience coz it most certainly does in my direct experience. There is no shot that is safe with any powder burning rifle that isn't with the .22 just some people fly too close to the wind

Kes
It does ricochet but the risk of a ricochet is almost eliminated by sensible behaviour and suitable backstops. Mention you know the ricochet problems to your FEO and explain that you understand low angle shots at hard ground are prone to the problem if the ground is dry, even low angle shots on wet grass can cause them so you will be shooting only with a very good backstop and taking all other possible scenarios into account. He is more likely to be impressed than to refuse. A careful shooter is a safe bet. Good luck.
browning123
I've shot more with my .22LR than any other rifle I've owned.
Gimlet
Low velocity, non-frangible bullets like .22 subs have a greater chance of ricocheting than high velocity fragmentary bullets and the long slow whine and lack of muzzle noise make it more obvious. All bullets can ricochet and rapid, powerful CF rounds probably do so more often than people realise but it happens so quickly and is masked by the noise. I've certainly had HMR BT ricochets and on stony ground where you'd think they'd fragment. All it takes is the bullet to glance an object without the tip making contact directly and it will scream like a good un. It happens all too easily when shooting into the ground at a shallow angle, whatever the surface. The hollow points are much worse. The .22lr is as safe as houses with the right drill. Novices graduating from air rifles need to take particular care, especially when shooting over familiar ground. An air rifle, it ain't. superspark
Under the right conditions all bullets will ricochet. In the last 500 rounds fired through my .22lr ive have 2 ricochets. It happens, just make sure you pick your shots with good back stops and you will be fine
LPJA
I considered the 17HMR, I put in for both .22LR and the 17HMR and got both on my ticket. I went out and got myself a 22LR and I'm so glad I did, they are 100% an excellent piece of kit. Edited July 27, 2014 by LPJA
spandit
At 3x the price of .22LR, you'll soon get tired of .17HMR plinking! A moderated bolt action .22LR is about as silent as a gun can be when using subs
NickB65
Since getting my CZ 452 .22LR I have shot 500+ rounds and can count the number of ricochet on one hand. I love the gun, the flexibility and smiles it brings to your face as you drop another bunny from 80 yards.....
Therealchucknorris
Buy the rifle and always think that your shot might ricochet just before you pull the trigger to ensure you're giving enough consideration to whether the shot is safe. Do the same with my .223 and .243 before I pull the trigger there too. Haven't had anyone pop up with a bullet in their backside as yet so just remember safety first and if in doubt, crack the air rifle out (for suitable quarry). victorismyhero
what are folks feelings about the "varmint grenade" type frangible rounds, they turn to dust on contact with virtually anything, quarry, ground, a twig, a grape (watch their video ooooh...I could crush a grape....) BUT are they any good. I know thet are expensive, but are they worth the extra...

Billy.
So after all the drumming you've had about the bullet behaviours. I'll add my advice for once you're set up and all zeroed. Do not ever clean your .22LR rifle on the inside. I must've put tens of thousands of rounds through mine and it's still as accurate as ever. Cleaning it would throw the zero off for a fair few shots and may then need zeroing afterwards.
Rst1990
Although the feo has given me the nod, I'm still thinking that I may not pursue getting the above rifle. I really enjoy going out with the rifle (fac air) at the moment and have a lot of fun targeting etc in the field but to have a rifle and worry about every shot before I pull the trigger it puts a damper on things :-( Whether it's just me and I have looked into this abit far or perhaps some people may have exaggerated this issue I'm not shore. Don't get me wrong I have had some ricochets with the fac air but have been in a controlled environment with the power turned down, it's just the thought of something spinning off for a mile out of control. Mentalmac
Just get an HMR and keep the FAC Air. That way you can use the FAC air you already have up to 60yards and then an HMR from 60-150, Simples. That's what I do anyway. I haven't ever had a ricochet from an HMR, they may be able to, but I haven't had on myself. Be respectful and mindful about it, but I wouldn't worry too much about it especially if you have a safe shot.

drut
Would be worth asking if there were any forum members near you using 22lr,seeing one in use would sort your doubts one way or the other.
Mentalmac
Would be worth asking if there were any forum members near you using 22lr,seeing one in use would sort your doubts one way or the other. Or a local PW member with an open ticket to take their 22LR to the OP's perm and they can have a go in the setting that it will be used in to provide reassurance?
