I struggle to find socks that i can :- 1) Get over my calfs. 2) Do not go stiff and unstretchable after the first wash. 3) do not always need garters. Please can anyone help point me in teh right direction. Thanks
loriusgarrulus
I always get the cotton mix ones from Tesco or Azda for everyday socks. Have you tried them. both have a good sock selection.

loriusgarrulus
They often sell the long, wool mix ski and hiking sox too. Might be worth having a look. Usually up to size 12 at Azda and George.. http://www.shootingsocks.co.uk/the-harris-cable-shooting-stocking These are shooting socks and mention for extra wide calfs. If your socks are high wool content they are probably best done on a 30OC wool cycle wash as wool socks on too high a temperature will tighten and stop stretching if you wash them on too high and vigorous a wash cycle. If in doubt hand wash them in warm water and rinse. Edited November 17, 2014 by loriusgarrulus

loriusgarrulus
Beside which if you sent them by post for laundering I don't think the Post Office take parcels with Bio Hazard markings on.

Had them for 25 yrs ( rotate several prs). Having said that I don't wear breeks n garters

figgy
Penne socks are ok. House of Cheviot do some too, I have large calf's and can just get them on, go for the larger sizes. Never found any that can be worn without a garter, the country type of sock/stocking have garters for a reason they won't stay up. Lord Geordie
Sounds like you need a cotton, Nylon, elastine mix sock! Pure wool can be a proverbial pain. 40% wool, then the other 59% mixed polymers and 1% elastine offer a sock that will stretch! I had problems with getting the sock over my heel. I went with a wool mix and found it so much easier! It also stopped the cold feet syndrome from lack of circulation due to tight topped socks. loriusgarrulus
Went on this site, just for the RA socks............. £50 later........ We actually go to the shop in Ripley. With OH and myself looking round and stuff in the shop that is not even on the website. You got off lightly at £50. Did you see the Viper in black green or camo. Great for rough shooting. lksopener
Bit left field but if you know anyone going to the states grab some merino redhead socks from bass pro they are about $10 and the best socks I've ever wore by a mile. They are comfy, wash well and warm.

norfolk dumpling
Get your wife to knit some - you control size, you pick yarn and if you have a high % wool content they will be warmer than bought items. Mine have reinforced heels/toes.
