Not sure if this sits here or equipment.

I struggle to find socks that i can :-

1) Get over my calfs.

2) Do not go stiff and unstretchable after the first wash.

3) do not always need garters.

Please can anyone help point me in teh right direction.

Thanks

They often sell the long, wool mix ski and hiking sox too. Might be worth having a look. Usually up to size 12 at Azda and George..

These are shooting socks and mention for extra wide calfs.

If your socks are high wool content they are probably best done on a 30OC wool cycle wash as wool socks on too high a temperature will tighten and stop stretching if you wash them on too high and vigorous a wash cycle. If in doubt hand wash them in warm water and rinse.

Penne socks are ok.

House of Cheviot do some too, I have large calf's and can just get them on, go for the larger sizes.

Never found any that can be worn without a garter, the country type of sock/stocking have garters for a reason  they won't stay up.

Sounds like you need a cotton, Nylon, elastine mix sock! Pure wool can be a proverbial pain. 40% wool, then the other 59% mixed polymers and 1% elastine offer a sock that will stretch!

I had problems with getting the sock over my heel. I went with a wool mix and found it so much easier! It also stopped the cold feet syndrome from lack of circulation due to tight topped socks.
