Dissertation Final Survey - Shotgun Cartridge Colour Coding

As I've been out for 50 sporting with the son in laws today I had a look at other calibers when I was in the gunroom this evening. a 410 will lodge in the choke area of a 28 bore. The cartridge was a 3" and some of the case was hanging out of the end of the barrel but a 410 or fourlong might just hold unseen. A 28 will sit just in front of the chamber of a 20 (Nasty big bang) I dont have a 16 so couldn't check that one out. And I dont have a 10 so I dont know if a 12 would sit in front of that chamber and we all know about 20/12 issue. perhaps others might be able to check out the potential problems. I never mix different sizes at all so have never had an issue. I've seen a couple of bursts with mud and snow in the end of a barrel and I had a blocked barrel when I slipped and fell own a bank. The gun wasn't loaded but I could have easily put one in resulting in a problem if I had been careless or dismissive. I had a bit of a job finding a straight stick to rod it out with.

I know that this isn't what the original post was about but it shows another angle of getting a burst cause by an obstruction.

My 3 inch Fiocchi 410 cartridges fall straight through my 28 bore Beretta SP ? But you've got me doubting myself so I'm going to try it again now.

That's why I only own a 12 bore, 28 bore and 410 as the wrong cartridge will either not go in the chamber or simply fall straight through the barrel and out the end. I only recently purchased my first 410 and before I agreed to buy it, I got the dealer to demonstrate that the 410 cartridge would fall straight through the barrels of a 28 bore.

OK so I've just checked my 410 cartridges in my Beretta SP 28 bore and found the following......

They fall straight through IC Improved Cylinder and 1/4 Quarter .......However, they DO NOT fall through M Modified, IM Improved Modified or F Full choke.

Not an issue for me as I only shoot with IC and 1/4 for Game but please be aware that they do not pass through tighter chokes.

Again thank you everyone for your comments and completions of my survey. I find this subject very interesting and hearing different views even more so.

As for you 'Marki' I have thanked people repeatably, do you have any more questions for me?!?!

Only my previous questions.

Why specifically this issue and what data do you have that gives it value?

I'd be really interested in your opening statement.

oh right, no problem.

won't let me so I'll post it here for those that cannot read the several posts that quoted it.

Marki Said:

No.
What makes you think you can come on here, without any introduction, and demand that your rather pointless survey is completed?

Kids today aye?

There you go. Have a good ol' **** over that one. I hope it has the effect you desire.

Hello Marki,

My opening statement ? Here goes,

During my time running the Gunroom, we took in a gun as part of a beautiful pair of sidelocks, which had blown due to this exact reason. Seeing the aftermath of such accident first hand inspired me to see what fellow shooters thought on the procedure of colour coding to potentially decrease the risk of incidents as stated above.

I have spent some time at the Birmingham Proof House with the experts there, especially Peter Powell the deputy chairman of the Proof House. I have seen and learnt some very interesting things on this matter to help me write up my dissertation.

I shoot a 12 bore only and have one gauge of cartridge in my cabinet, so to be clear I am neither for nor against the notion of colour coding. I am merely in the interest of all concerned, simply at this stage posing the question. However, individual reactions to it, are in themselves and enlightening insight.

Thank you for your interest.

Tiff, many thanks for your post with more info.

Yes, you do get a mixed response ffrom an open forum.

The important thing is not to take anything personally.

I think it is absolutely great that you have taken this subject for your dissertation and to see some of the extent that you are researching it is a credit to you.

If shooting is what you have a passion for I hope you find a career that enables you to use it, if that is what you want. I know there are some on hear who would appreciate seeing the end result. ATB

as a multi gauge shooter I use 12 20 and 28,i have found that all 20g shell ive bought are coloured yellow, which is fine but I had a load of old gamebore 20g shells given to me that were green,so maybe the industry are already adopting the standard without actually saying so,comments on colour brands etc might be usefull to this survey.i know 12g shells are like smarties they come in every colour, all my 28g shells are red and as already mentioned all my 20g are yellow ie chedite, fiocchi, lylevale, hull, eley.

I posted a while ago (page 1 I think) and have filled in the questionaire. I shoot 12, 20 and 410

At Valley Arms in Ruthin there is a S/S above the door to the armoury which has suffered the 20/12 mishap. Makes for sobering viewing.

There was, within the last year an o/u with burst lower barrel hanging from the ceiling of the gun dept of Kent woolgrowers in Ashford but i'm not sure how it had happened. I'm sure that if you asked them they might help you with a few digital pictures to display a burst.

Completed.

Quite a good format, but at least one seemingly 'leading' question which is not good in a well designed questionnaire.

Introduction, to help the idiots keep 20 gauge cartridges separate from 12 gauge guns is the obvious starting point. But I doubt that the 4, 8 and 10 gauge users need molly-coddling in this respect, as they do not belong to the groups where these minority numpties preside. Just my opinion, of course. Personally, I look after my safety and that of others around me. That includes simple precautions to avoid all possibility of loading the wrong gauge, chamber length, load or whatever.

What are the odds, I wonder, on one particular poster on this thread closing barrels to action? A common failing of many younger shooters.

Completed, I am in favour of colour coding, I have 12g and use a number of different shells for clays, subsonics etc and the wife shoots a 20b so we are forever checking and double checking storage, carts etc.

Good luck with the degree, dissertations are bloody awful, I still remember doing mine!

Again thank you all for your comments and opinions. I'm sorry I'm not able to write back to you all individually, but I have read and thought about what you have said and acted upon it. I intend to contact Kent Woolgrowers and Valley arms for some images, I took some pretty gruesome photos at the proof house last month too!

Thank you all.
