motty
After missing out on any pigeon shooting last weekend, I was desperate to get out and enjoy some sport. I met up with my mate David at first light yesterday,on the farm that I have done some beating on last season. I had really no idea where to set up - I have not been for a look during the week as I have no keys to the farm gates. The first maize strip we looked at had no birds down feeding, but several were in the wood next door. There didn't appear to be any food left for them here. We had a walk through the wood and shot a crow each. We could see in the distance where the pigeons were. I went to one wood and David went to one close by. My wood has maize strips either side. There was plenty of food left for the birds, here. I put out at least 800 pigeons from the trees when I arrived. I shot a magpie while I waited to see if anything returned. After a little while, and after a few small parties had come in, I decided to set up. I put out a magnet and a load of flocked shells to start. A flapper and dead birds on canes were soon added. The sport was fantastic. I had maybe just two pigeons actually decoy into the pattern the whole day. The decoys seemed to channel the pigeons towards me, before they chose where to try and land in the trees. This meant I had some cracking driven-type birds. I wish I had taken my camera, as I had flocks of 200+ coming in regularly. It would have made good video footage. They would catch me out - they were up there at 150 yards before dropping like stones towards me. It was hard trying to pick the best chances to take. Later on in the day, I glassed a huge mass of perhaps 3000 pigeons that seemed to be feeding on a strip further over the farm. David could have perhaps moved there (he wasn't getting as much action as me), but he got his van stuck. David did join me for a little while and shot a few more birds. At 3pm the pigeons had had enough and so had I. I packed up with my best bag of the year, so far, 55. We then had some fun trying to 'unstick' David's van. Both of our vehicles got covered in mud and I nearly lost my truck in a dyke, but we got his van out in the end! . .

motty
A good day out. Will you be thinking how you can get to the remaining 3,000 pigeons? Yes, quite possibly. I have a bit more of an idea of where the pigeons are attacking now.
