Bob Nudd MBE

I bought my brother-in- law a day fishing with Bob Nudd as a Christmas present. Luckily for me Bob was happy for both of us to fish. We had organised the day at Decoy Lakes near Peterborough on Monday.

The weather was amazing. Which wasn't ideal for my tweed hat !

I hadn't coarse fished for 15 years and Tom for 11, so Bob kindly supplied all the kit. Bob promised us one of the days of our lives (or at least fishing wise!) and boy was he right.

Fishing between 1000 and 1500 I had 110lbs of mainly carp and a few barbel. The carp ran to 8lbs and the barbel 4lbs. My brother in law had an amazing 160lbs - Bob christened him a machine (he did use to fish in matches). I have never caught so many fish in a session. Ever. It appears as though the two of us caught more fish than the rest of the dozen or so anglers at the fishery that day managed in aggregate - Bob knows his stuff !!

Bob was a top, top bloke and great company. He was brought up on a farm and loves rough shooting, but we also managed a good discussion about pigeon decoying too as he has done a bit of that in the past.

Hopefully I've attached a picture of me, Bob and my bag

I've been fortunate to have been friends with Bob for a few years now and can honestly say he is one of the nicest men I have met.

I've worked with him on coaching days numerous times, his ability to enthuse young and old is fantastic and his passion for angling is unparalleled.

If you ever you fancy a great day out fishing with an absolute legend in the angling world "four times world champion" get online and book it. I'm sure you will remember it for years!

I will admit to never having heard of Bob Nudd, but then I have never been into fishing.

Nudd is an unusual name I would think! I used to go to school in Barnet with a Tony Nudd, the family moved away during my school time, I wonder if they are/were related.

My son Ben loves Matt Hayes, watches all his program's.One weekend when we where fishing at the Angel of the North (Ben was 8 at the time)he kept saying when I was tacking up," Matt wouldn't do that ,Matt would do this bla bla bla" .After nearly a full day of Matt Matt Matt, I said" Ben will you shut up about Matt blooming Hays, what is he your hero or something?" There was a slight pause with a puzzled luck and then he said "don't be silly dad he can't fly"

Ben was fortunate to meet him one day when he was a guest at the opening of a new tackle shop in Peterlee & I told him the tale which made his day and Bens.

You might of, if he'd won BBC's Sports Personality of the Year. Apparently he recieved most votes one year, but the BBC wouldn't allow it for some reason or so the story goes.

I was going to write something along those lines, 'Another one along with George Digweed and Alan Scotthorne, who should have won BBC's Sports Personality of the Year', if representing the country and winning are important.

Nice chap. I met him many (many) years ago at an angling exhibition at the NEC. He was happy to chat away and gave lots of tips to the spotty teenager that I was at the time.

Bizarrely though, he looks no different 23 years later...

One of my aunts married a Nudd and lived in Hickling, Norfolk, where I believe Bob hails from so I've often wondered if we are related. Also on that side of my family there were several farming families. I've never pursued this as both my mum and dad were from big families - mum was one of 7 and dad was one of 6 and there are hundreds of cousins - so you never quite know what might come out of the woodwork! Might do Ancestry.com one day and see what comes up.
