Jay_Russell
Just seen them harvesting wheat locally to me. Stopped for a look and there was a chap and what i assumed was his youngish son blasting away at the rabbits. Was n8ce to see young and old enjoying some sport. Isnt it a bit early for harvesting? Westward
It's early for wheat. Are you sure it wasn't winter barley?
Scully
Winter barley is just getting to the 'milky' stage around here (Cumbria) and 'darn sarf' are often quite a bit ahead of us season wise, so it may have been that you saw?
malkiserow
I've seen lots of barley fields from London to the Midlands either cut or "had a go" with one pass of the combine around the edge. Not seen any wheat cut yet
Jay_Russell
They had pretty much finished when i was there. Looked like wheat stubble but i could be wrong. The winter barley in other fields is still green here Edited July 10, 2015 by Jay_Russell
wyatt
Still green near Brummieland, poor yield predicted, ears are very light.

JDog
Too early for wheat. It may have been whole crop rye.
henry931
They've started the barley here. The rape is being sprayed so might get started next week. Then after normally they do the wheat and then the beans. Oil seed rape and beans are by far the best for rabbits and foxes I'm surprised Re. rabbiting - normally wheat/barley is a waste of time ... unless you have a real rabbit problem

Then you can approach the farmer and say 'the pigeons are hitting your barley/wheat/rape' or whatever the crop may be, may I shoot them. kennett
Barley curls it's ears over when it ripens and has horrible, itchy long hairs that grow out of each grain. Wheat keeps it's head up and has grains stacked all the way around the ear. Barley ripens earlier, and it will be winter (rather than spring) drilled crops that are being cut now. Stopped n asked the fella if he wanted any shooting done but he weren't keen lol Worth an ask tho Not the best way to go about getting shooting in my opinion (for what it's worth)....asking if he'wants' any shooting done. The approach most likely to work would be to spot pigeons using a particular field then asking if there was any chance of a one off day to shoot some pigeons on that field only, the following day perhaps. Farmers are never short of people to shoot pigeons these days so don't 'need' anyone, knowing a bit about farming in general is a great headstart and conversation starter to give you some common ground
