orite chaps, went out a week or so back on my shoot as our birds are coming in 3 weeks,i see this fox walking through some heather, she was about 400 yards off me but fortunately was heading straight towards me with the wind in my face,so i got down and waited,it seemed to take for ever as she was going right, left and all over the place, but finally when she got around 160 yards she stopped and dropped literally with my 243..the reason ime putting this on is when picking her up she had dropped these 5 chicks out her mouth,i think they are thrushes but i could be wrong as this was in the middle of an old grouse moor, see what you all think..any way good result one less to worry about as she was obviously feeding cubs,i shot 3 of them a few days later, but i sense one or two could be left, cheers Simon...

Looks like thrush chicks, Good of you to post these pictures Simon, It just goes to show how keeping the Fox numbers down in areas increases the song bird population, in particular the ground nesting species. One of my perms commented the other day about the amount of Skylarks Lapwings and Snipe that have been around recently.

Nice shooting by the way :good:

Nice work Simon.

Dougy, "One of my perms commented the other day about the amount of Skylarks Lapwings and Snipe that have been around recently."

I cleared 36 foxes and double figure magpies from a small permission I have and this year the farmer and myself have counted 31 English partridge, 15 brown hares, several skylarks and lapwing plus over a dozen pheasant and uninformed people call me cruel ?

Some time ago I posted on here about a fox I shot one night on a 'sit out'.

Fox was hunting for mice in wheat stubble. Pouncing about all over the place.

Shot it and it fell straight down. Left it as I was hoping for more.

Nearly two hours later I went to pick it and as I did - one very live field mouse dropped from behind its teeth.

My dog lunged at it and picked it but I hollered drop it and she did.

One lucky little critter.
