He was given them by a farmer but he uses a 20g so he has no use for them. Unfortunately the farmer just left them in the bag out in a shed, so alot of them and rusted beyond use. I will be cutting them in half and disposing the cases. What would be the safest way to get rid of the power? Obviously with the state of the cartridges it will be useless.. I will be keeping hold of the shot though. Tip the powder into water, let it soak and dispose of it with household rubbish. Or mix the powder with earth and bury it in the garden. rem708 Posted July 28, 2015 Report Share Posted July 28, 2015 (edited) Beware the main consituant of powder is nitrocellulose and that is NOT soluble in water and hence not rendered safe when wet. Only safe way of disposal is to burn and I would choose the method pestcontrol has suggested just in case it has become unstable. The Health & Safety Executive and most Material Safety Data Sheets (MSDS) specifically list controlled burning as a means of disposal of small quantities of smokeless powder. The reason for this is that it basically turns to gas, whereas dumping large quantities of nitrates into the water table is dangerous and should be avoided at all costs. (Contacted in liquid form or otherwise ingested, nitrates cause rapid and often fatal falls in blood pressure in mammals and some other species. It's a more dangerous version of the effect your granny with angina takes advantage of with her nitro-glycerine spray.) Shotgun powder is fast, so it'll need to be very small quantities - half a level teaspoon would be about the most you'd want to burn at once. Put it down in piles on tin foil or a concrete slab about 12" apart, in the open air, and use a long taper to ignite them one at a time. The powder will turn into a mixture of nitrogen and water vapour, which are obviously harmless. If you're unsure, start with a single pellet / square and work up from there. Same process has done fine for me for pulled rifle rounds. Oh and don't stand over the stuff you're burning - the flames may be tall. You calling me a fool, fool lol Did a pile of it a little while ago and had to replace the gutter as the flame was a little high. Lesson learnt there me thinks.
