JDog
The drive on the beach or rather the rocks has guns standing well below the high water mark and the drive has to be timed to coincide with low tide.

Interesting , so we must assume they were all using steel shot , I have shot an awful lot of steel but I would not be wanting to shoot it at those birds. pontbeck
None of them would have been using steel shot. Too right they wouldn't I had a day on extreme pheasants on a "High bird shoot " The bag for the day was over 300 but I didn't see more than a dozen fold up, one to my gun.The gun next to me was using 50 grams of no. 3 shot out of full and full chokes and shot 5 for 65 shots on one drive. He was introduced to me as one of the best shots to have shot there. Definitely an experience but one I shall not repeat..

ben0850
ive never heard such ******** in my life, the estate I pick up on has seriously high birds, testing and difficult shots. We know the calibre of the gun team differs each weekend. To suggest all you need is a 'wonder howitzer and cartridge' is naive at best.. A no.3 pellet of lead will kill any pheasant within 80 yards if it strikes the top half, and multiple hits would guarantee kills. It is merely skill level. Sure, perhaps 1 time in twenty a pheasant will fly through a pattern, but that doesn't equate to 5/

Sparse enough yes, but not so sparse that 4 of 5 pheasants would fly through it?

motty
Nothing like being judge and jury eh!!!!!!!!! Regardless of the morality of taking on these extreme pheasants, the people doing the shooting would know a little bit about how to go about it. Going geared up with a load of number 2 steel through a half choke would put next to nothing in the bag at those ranges.
Old farrier
Hi Sorry but a lot of this is pure assumption It's gestimate at range and cartridge 😗 There's some skilled shots shooting some high stuff Weather it's right or wrong I won't judge and I'm pretty sure with the high profile Gest they did it all by the book and could afford( heavy shot ) any long range cartridge Just my thoughts Tin hat on All the best Of

dodeer
Nothing like being judge and jury eh!!!!!!!!! Too right! Who actually cares anyway. I'm not going to loose any sleep worrying about what someone else is doing. Its a well established famous shoot, im sure they have thought of the legalities about that drive. kevinz3
saw a lot of these videos and there will a lot of birds will be pricked for sure at that range , and he fires both barrels at then and a lot are way past him and shooting a lot from behind when they are past , 53 grams are for geese
figgy
I'm sure Dave says 80 meters for the cliff then another 10-15 meters for the height of the birds above them so around the 100 meter Mark. A good bit further than the 80 yards being said on here. Wonder how right he is though with distances,I think he will have asked before saying so. If you using carts that can kill at the ranges your shooting at I don't see a problem with high bird shoots. It offers the better shots a challenge that they don't get on your average shoot. It's quite funny when Beefy starts ranting about antis and jobs in the countryside provided by country sports, you can see Dave look and think ohh hell I've got to stop him.
