Any tips on insurance companies? I have two other cars with full no claims bonus but I won't have any ncb on this one.

Might be worth a call to a broker as some companies will give you say 5 years if you have it already on another car. I put masai winndows in the back of mine and then the big insurance companies would not insure it.

LV will match your no claims discount on your new motor if you switch insurers (Liverpool Victoria )

well they did with me :good:

Welcome to the world of Defender ownership. Try Adrian Flux. Been with them 6 years and never had a problem.

Thanks. I did get a price from Adrian Flux. They were £160 cheaper than the cheapest quote through comparethemarket.com (but I won't get a meerkat toy) so I have gone with them. Was still more than I expected to pay (£440) though.

You'll either hate it and get rid quickly ............................... or ........................................... love it and have one for the rest of your life :good: They don't have faults, it's character.

Very true.

I've not been without one for the last 30 years.

Mine is an N reg 300Tdi and i pay £270 fully comp, Full home relay type cover as well as Green Lane recovery and 2 named drivers. I'm 49 with 3 points so for yours, it doesn't sound too bad.

Here we go, cue the usual comments mostly from people who have never owned one.

Maintained they are incredibly reliable, capable vehicles. The problems arise when they are abused by the ignorant and maintained by the tight fisted.

I have owned a Series motor for 12 years way back when I worked in the oil industry, funny how, after returning from a rig to the car park where my vehicle had sat for three or four weeks, my old IIa would fire up and drive off whilst the boys in their beemers and mercs would be stuck there?

My current 90 doesn't leak oil any worse than an equivalent 4x4. During the time I've owned it both my mates have had horrendously expensive and continuing problems with their Nissan Navaras. Bits that have fallen off, packed up, destroyed themselves or just utterly failed.

One caveat, try to avoid the really early TD5's. I prefer my tried and tested 300Tdi to any of the modern variants, as I can still fix it without requiring a fangled diagnostic machine.

My only caveat to Mick's post would be to beware of the' first' fly by wire 300's. I've got one!!. Fortunately the No4 injector has never given me trouble, but replacing the throttle potentiometer was fun - and I do have a spare injection pump. Mine also has a 'Thor' (?) gear drive conversion. No timing belt.

It is now redundant, SORN'd and looking for a new home.

Of course you also have to take into account the comments of those of us who are land rover owners but are honest enough to look at them without the rose tinted.i have a land rover out of necessity not by choice.and I would state after owning discovery's range rover and now on my third defender I can fully understand why they have the poor reputation they have.
