Pound to euros

Booked a holiday in Lanzarote for 27th August - 6th sept

As £1 is currently 1.3 euros is it better to buy now ?

I'm genuinely wondering what effect an in or out vote will have against the exchange rate ?

Theoretically, you should get 130 Euros for £100, but then it depends on what the seller's rate is. I have always found that it's best to buy currency while in the country I'm visiting. However, I did buy $USA directly online from a company who delivered it next day, and offered a better rate than travel agents etc, and as I purchased a few hundred pounds worth, I didn't pay for delivery. At the time of writing this, I can't remember what the company was called.

How do I find out what the rate is over there please Steve ?

Do you use cash out there or card when doing the exchange ?

I've found that cash is far better than using a credit/debit card. I'm not sure how to find out the rate offered where you are going, but sometimes, the hotel you are staying at will offer better rates than the official exchange shops. I've also found that some shop/business owners will give you a better rate too. For example, while in Turkey one year, a small family run general store, gave us a far better exchange rate. The owner told us that he 'bought' £GBP's and then exchanged it back into Lira at the end of the tourist season when the rate was higher for him.

I would purchase a small amount of Euro before you go, just to tide you over until you find a good seller. Where are you off too??

Beware of scams when changing abroad, always ask them "If I give you £100 what will I get in my hand"

If in doubt change £10 to start with, sometimes the headline rate only applies if you change £10,000 on a Tuesday.

As for hotels,I have never seen a better rate in a hotel than on the street.

I came back from Spain on Sunday 116 in the hotel 124 in the street.

If we vote in on Thursday the £ will rally and it would be a good time to buy. £ against the $ has been falling on the uncertainty of the vote. Today I just bought a tanker full of diesel just in case we are out on friday and the £ crashes.

If in just watch it if it climbs and buy when it levels out ?

If we vote out assuming it goes down is it likely to level out by August - sept ?

Just change it here for the sake of a few pence difference you'll only loose a pound or two on £500

And you'll give all your loose cents away as tips anyway, or leave them for the cleaners etc.

Enjoy your holiday and dont worry for the sake of a couple of quid ?

I went to NY and changed 2k (2 Dollars to a Pound back then), so that did make a difference, but as already said on large amounts you get a much better deal and delivered !

Enjoy your sunshine, I'm off in 2 weeks, can hardly wait.

Interesting question my guess would be that It will be choppy for a long time and gradually fall against the euro for the next few years if we are out. If we are in it will likely rally massively on Friday and that would be the time to but as it will probably go up too high and then fall back over the next week or so. As Mickyh says it may not make much difference (10% or so?) depending on your budget more savings from a prepaid card than the exchange rate.

The pound saw a massive gain against the dollar today (biggest in years) after the results of a poll indicated we wouldn't be leaving the EU.

Personally I would wait until the 25th and buy Euros then, the pound will have risen further following the outcome of the vote.

You can see it as a Win-Win situation... either we vote to leave and you lose a few quid in the exchange or alternatively we vote to remain and you get more holiday funny money for your pounds!

I'd rather get half as many euros and be out 😂

Suppose what will be, will be. Either way I'm off out there and will enjoy myself :)

If you look at the historical charts and ignore/smooth the Brexit impact, buying north of 1.30 is a great price, the volatility seen in the last couple of weeks has been mainly due to corrections in the in/out forecasting and today's rally corrective action to undo the cost of a leave vote as it appears less likely. If the stay vote is the 'winner' then with positive financial forecasts and I'm sure some posturing and manipulation from our illustrious leaders we may well see 1.35 next week, if outs wins then things will hit the skids, but there is a huge amount of resistance at 1.25 as seen recently and you can't ignore that in the immediate term (days, hours even) the UK financial picture is rosier than the wider EU. Against USD however is a different story...

Remember that it is 75% likely that we will remain. If we do stay in then there will be a strengthening of Sterling against all currencies. 1.35-1.40 is likely in the short term.

If we vote to leave then there will be a very bumpy ride for the next couple of years. Depending on how quickly Europe implodes then parity with the Euro could become a possibility.

Unless your talking a couple of grand, then it really isn't worth worrying about. Two years ago you would be lucky to get 1.11 to 1.12 to the £. Post Office at the counter gave me 1.18.9 last week 1.19 near enough on £500. It makes everything in Slovenia very reasonable and rated about 75% of what it would cost me to stay here in the UK. Half board at a nice place for 45 euros a night.

Personally I do not believe all of the threats and warnings. I think once the situation has been decided it will be back to business as usual but not paying huge sums of money to a corrupt organisation. There will be some winners some losers and you can tell the losers by their whining and whinging about possibly coming out.

Keep the faith.

Are you taking that bird you fancy from work that you live with.

No mate I'm taking my girl friend who dislikes the weasel I work with almost as much as I do 😂

Also taking my 14 year old sister as my parents are unfortunately too busy working to have time off so at least she'll get a nice holiday before going back to school.

It depends on where you go but if they readily accept credit cards, consider a foreign currency card from Travellex or Caxton fx. Both offer good rates and you can re-load it easily when you are away. Whatever you do, don't buy at the airport unless you have pre-ordered online. The difference will make your eyes water! At a push, I have used cash machines abroad and the rate I get from my bank (Natwest) always seems pretty good.
