ChrisAsh
Dont forget the measurement of a cartridge is the fired length not the unfired length so if for instance you by 70mm cartridges and unload one and straighten out the crimp the who length is 70mm and considerably smaller when crimped I think he is using 3" carts as i have never seen burnt ends before on 410 Edited September 1, 2016 by ChrisAsh
deadeye18
I had the same thing happen to me.webley 410 2-1/2 chamber and lyalvale 2-1/2 cart and they were melted just the same. Some were melted as much as half way down so I stopped using them and switched to Winchester carts and they came out fine after firing. snarepeg
As said. It's poor quality in some of the casings, but unless your reloading them forget about it, am sure the rabbit/pigion etc won't know it's been shot with a **** case cartridge. Dangerous Brian
As already mentioned cheap plastic cases will do this. Also with RTOs, the cases are sometimes shived prior to loading so the RTO is easier to do and the finish neater. The result of doing that is the now very thin plastic melts very easily. Sussex gardener
So do you think I have grounds to return the remainder of the slab for a refund?
Old farrier
So do you think I have grounds to return the remainder of the slab for a refund? Would you be happy if they were 12 or 20 bore shells with the same thing happening? Just my thoughts All the best Of

ChrisPCarter
I've tried most of the 410 cartridges available in different sizes in my Mossberg pump, a W&S O/U, Yildiz single barrel and have never had that or in fact any damage to the ends on any of them, whether rolled ends or crimps. Something is badly wrong there. Probably the wrong chamber size or a very bad batch of cartridges?
blasterjudd
Stop buying Eley .410s then your problems will be solved they have had all sorts of issues with .410s for over 2 years.... Buy FIOCHI instead they far better made !!! Stop buying Eley .410s then your problems will be solved they have had all sorts of issues with .410s for over 2 years.... browning123
I've never seen this myself - and I have been shooting all sizes of .410 cartridge since the mid 50's.
motty
Is it really that much of a problem?
snarepeg
I personally wouldn't be bothered, providing the cartridges are doing what they are made for, providing you point it in the correct place. Eley buy them in capped in the thousands, they are made as cheap as can be used to throw away after. Fiochi are in a different league, and reload nice, (as do Winchester if you can afford them)
JohnfromUK
I have seen the same on .410 - and I'm sure it isn't a length issue because my gun (AyA) is 3" and I have only used 2 1/2" cartridges. I have used Eley and Fiochi, but cannot remember if it happened with one or both, only that I have seen it and was a little 'puzzled' at the time. .410 do run very high pressures and I assumed it was related to that. Pugs
.410 3" cartridge pressures are proofed to at least 5 tonnes per square inch, any 3" chamber should handle a 3" cartridge.
Walker570
As promised I tested three cartridges in my Mossy pumper. An Eley roll turnover non toxic bismuth 3 inch, an Eley so called subsonic 3 inch and a Lylevale #5shot fibre wad 3 inch and they all came out clean and tidy, in fact the bismuth shell was as new. The other two had a slight crinkle to the edge but no sign of tearing or burning. Fired twenty or more RCs at pigeon last week and half of them, the plastic shells had pieces ripped out of them a third of the way down.
