keg
Although funny for the person doing important work (and if it's the social service workers I mentioned above) then probably not ideal for the people desperately waiting for services Would you work in a public place where your screen could possibly overlooked when dealing with matters of such sensitivity and privacy? Vince Green
This table blocking happens a lot in our local Whetherspoons and I have complained but the staff just shrug. Edited November 18, 2016 by Vince Green

Billy.
It's funny how everyone's bothered by what's on someone's screen, but not the fact that most shops and pubs use unsecured wireless networks. Unless you're running a VPN, you're pretty much handing out everything to anyone with half a clue about data theft and a laptop (they don't even need to be in the same building as you). Chris Bb
Our local Waitrose café is full of wrinklies drinking free coffee, reading free newspapers and generally keeping warm. A local club even holds committee meetings there without paying a bean for anything! If I were running a business I wouldn't put up with table hogging by individuals, at best I'd herd them all on to one table leaving the rest of the business open for business. Waitrose probably thought it was a good idea until all these people started taking the P, they're already saying they're thinking of knocking the free coffee thing on the head. Some complain migrants come over and exploit the system, but is it just human nature ? Also Chris I would suggest that the store is showing bad management. It's one thinking being hospitable but another to be taken advantage of. If I were the manager I'd be telling that club they were taking advantage and it wasn't on. It appears a lot of big companies staff sometimes just don't care because it's not their money/company and they don't want the bother ? EMT
Interesting idea. Do you know how much they charge per minute? Its either 5p or 6p a minute. But for that you get super fast wifi and as much as you can eat and drink.

Can't see them lasting 😳
stumfelter
Maybe the "everything is free just pay for the time" model will become more popular. Those that have opened seem to be doing well and turning a profit. http://www.ziferblat.co.uk Even with this business model some people still take the p#ss by popping in and filling their face as quickly as possible before leaving and paying for just a couple of minutes. If they opened one of those in Derby it would get rinsed!
Vince Green
A lot of OAPs sit in the library in the winter for hours reading the papers just to be in the warm. I'm sure a lot of people sitting in our local whetherspoons for hours on their laptops and tablets are not working they are just browsing social media or on knitting forums. Seadog1408
Don't see a problem at all, just share the table. Mike
Wb123
The flip side my other half finds when away on buisness is often piles of work to do around a 60 minute meeting but nowhere but coffee shops etc to do it! No idea what the solution is.

Kalahari
Come on guys. It is the cafe owners decision. If you don't like it go somewhere else. Tell them you are leaving for that reason, but mostly these are big chains and the people working there aren't paid enough to hassle people. ph5172
When in the US i use coffee shop WiFi for calls home and to do the usual net browsing - Costs me a cup of coffee (as they cant do tea at all!!) and saves me shelling out a fortune for hotel WiFi. I have noticed you do get kicked off after 30mins or so and then if its busy have to wait in turn to rejoin - i assume this is to stop people hogging the net all day
HDAV
When I was in New York a few years ago I got coffee from a deli then stood outside Starbucks using the free wifi.... I am soon to join the "work from home" club (no official desk) so will be clogging up the table at your local coffee shop...... People have always taken up more space putting bags on train/bus seats, spreading papers out etc now we just do it with a laptop and headphones As billy said don't worry about what people behind you might see..... 7daysinaweek
Here is the answer to those pesky coffee shop squatters! http://www.albertdock.com/food-drink/cafes/ziferblat/ this cafe charges 8 pence a minute for all you can eat and wifi, my boy who is 19 went in the other week, being a growing lad i asked him what he ate and how long he was in there? total of 24 minutes, he ate something like: 1 bowl of cornflakes 1 pop tart couple of glasses of orange juice a ham sandwich a piece of toast several cakes and in between he says he played on the piano in there, total cost was a couple of quid, he says the next time he goes back he will take a little longer in there and not pig out as much, he is very much into social engineering and likes to test out new social ideas. He spoke to the staff who said most people do not abuse the shop and eat responsibly and yes it turns a profit. He said it is a very relaxing atmosphere and as in previous posts many people use it as their office.
