I pay just over £6,000 a year for an annual season ticket to London. That's just the mainline train though, with a tube ticket it would be £7,000 and with parking at the station at the home end it would be £8,500.

I cant comment on how much better or worse they are since privatisation, but the service and reliability is satisfactory, although that varies from company to company.

My train season ticket is one of the most expensive, per mile, in the country. Something like 37p/mile. According to one of the newspapers this week.

But to echo Zapp's comment I am pretty ok with the service. When it goes **** up it can be frustrating.

I use the train from Newcastle to Durham booked in advance! It's about £12 return. Two quid more than fuel, but a lot less hassle and means I can have a drink too.

However! Newcastle to London was a joke! Quoted near £250 for that! Yet I can get a train from Paris all the way to Switzerland for 35 euros?

Our local service is expensive but the quality of service is very good - the trains are clean, in good condition and generally punctual. (South West Trains). My wife spent a few years as a director of a rail company on behalf of the government, prior to its re-privatisation after the original operating company lost its franchise. The antics of the unions, government, local passenger pressure groups and Railtrack made for some very entertaining dinner conversations as the whole thing was reminiscent of Yes Minister.

A complete rip-off. Why don't people tell them to get knotted. Chinese rail system about ten years ahead of ours.

I hesitate to point out that the Chinese rail system is state owned and does not need to make profits for investors.... are you suggesting we re-nationalise the railways?

Used to love going on the train but the last 2 trips I took were horrendous with overcrowding and they are pricing themselves out of the market.

If they raised the price to something realistic it might just solve the overcrowding!

The railway is an out dated concept for moving people about.

They have extended the platforms to accept 12 car trains, they have to leave a gap between one going and the next one arriving for safety.

It has reached full capacity for rush hour times and is only usable off peak.

Why not use it all for freight that will not moan about overcrowding and being late?
