7daysinaweek
It's just been on the local news that they had to shut ours for a while. This while the police sorted out a small problem regarding the dumping of a 3 foot rocket launcher that was eventually spotted by the staff. Wymberley, it seems to be a common method of disposal. One of my friends who worked at a tip in Burscough Lancashire found one a few years back, they contacted the local bobbies, got a call back some time later from MOD up round Preston way and they came the same day and collected it. The Army chaps said along the lines that they get called out regularly to collect all kinds and said it would have come from within the military. Could you imagine "What are you tipping today sir" "err an old pram, some household waste and oh nearly forgot, a standard issue rocket launcher". "Ok you need scrap metal and general refuse on the left and unwanted military weapons on the right and have a good day" atb 7diaw
UKPoacher
It really used to pee me off at the local tip with the Jobsworths and rules designed to get me working for their profit. In the end I let a local councillor have both verbal barrels when he tried to answer someone about fly tipping. I told him straight that if the council made it easier to dump rubbish instead of making it more difficult you wouldn't have the fly tipping problem which costs far more to remove and still has to be disposed of. Sadly the same sort of arrangements are being implemented in France. Last week I had to deal with the Ayatola of the Chabanais dumpit site when I took a load of stuff from a house some friends are renovating. She was quick to provide a dustbin for the copper and brass though. And she was happy to take that away and lock it up. But the rest of the stuff had to be graded and put in the correct skips by myself.

Sha Bu Le
Round our way for large items such as fridges, ovens washing machines or anything with a high metal content we don't phone the council at £25 a go. We just put it on the pavement outside of the house with a 'scrap' sign and its gone in less than a day. Within a square mile (ish) there must be 10 tatters operating with transit type pickups fitted with wire cages, they are after the metal, break things up and collect the scrap metal for a weigh in. Competition is fierce. It does concern me about the fridges I see put out for them, do they have the equipment and skills to de-gas them. Doubt it?? You cant weigh a fridge/freezer in so no scrap men will take them for free apart from the dodgy ones who remove the motors then dump the rest. Fisheruk
We have excellent waste tips here. Very helpful staff and easy to use. I get 12 trips for my pickup each year for non-recyclable. Unlimited pass for recyclable and I can take two black bags of household non-recyclable at the same time. If I need a hand with something heavy they are happy to help. Long may it continue. timmytree
I too You cant weigh a fridge/freezer in so no scrap men will take them for free apart from the dodgy ones who remove the motors then dump the rest. I took a fridge to a local metal recyclers recently, they didn't want it until I said it comes with some scrap copper pipe and I don't want anything for iit. Free metal, they'll take it. BrowningB525
My local tip is brilliant. The staff are friendly and helpful. Round our way for large items such as fridges, ovens washing machines or anything with a high metal content we don't phone the council at £25 a go. I'd rather drive to the tip than subsidise their existence.
old man
You cant weigh a fridge/freezer in so no scrap men will take them for free apart from the dodgy ones who remove the motors then dump the rest. That's certainly true here, of all of the vans that cruise only 1 has genuine credentials marked on it. He told me he can't take gassed up items not being able to de-gas them legally. The rest bowl around as fast as possible, unmarked, take anything metal and gone in a flash, As normal behavoiur, most of the locals being of the lazy persuasion keep the illegal traders going. ph5172
Our local one will pick anything up free of charge aside from Gas filled items - He will collect them at the same time as other scrap but charges the going disposal fee, it just saves the old dears from organising getting it to the tip

wymberley
Because it was quite a big one and we were going up anyway, I drove the Ranger up to Bristol to take a wardrobe from the house my step-son owned to the local tip. "You can't bring that in here", said jobsworth, "it's commercial." "No it's not, it's my private vehicle." "Don't care." "Fine". Drove to Portishead where they then lived and the guys couldn't have been more helpful.

Vince Green
At the local dump I used go to the blokes who worked there seemed more intent on sorting through what was being dumped and putting re-sellable things on one side.
