If you have been with them for over a year you should be out of contract so ask for the code. This code lasts for 1 month. Give this code to a new ISP to initiate transfer. You do not have to use the code at all but, in my experience, just asking for the code with many providers spurs them into offering you deals to stay. Failing that, sign up to AOL SIlver @ £14.99/month but do not accept their router - that way you wont be in a contract. Stay for a month, ask for your MAC code again & go back to Pipex as a new punter! Hope that helped.

Dave K Totally agree but I have AOL myself now but do not use their software - you don't need to. All emails can be configured with Outlook & IE7 is my browser. In the reply I gave it was how AOL can be used for a month to get a new Pipex deal as AOL are one of the only ISP,s to offer no contract deals

rarms
>i have been with plusnet for over 3 years no problems at all Except that recently my private email address has been bombarded with Spam, and eventually they confessed they got hacked and lots of users personal info got stolen! Plusnet are the biggest bunch of pillocks this side of mars! That said I am still with them, just too lazy to change!
bbjunkie
Don't even THINK about AOL. I have first hand experience about trying to migrate to another ISP - 3 months and over 20 phonecalls later I'm free from them, however they kept billing my debit card. Once my debit card was cancelled they set up a direct debit! When I called my bank's telephone banking line, they said they had numerous complaints about AOL doing this. Problem is the law is so twisted that they know they can get away with it. I set up a poll on a forum a few months ago, and almost every ex aol user that responded had been billed after cancelling

Marc M
Look at BE Unlimited and Demon too Mick, and as advised above, avoid Orange at all costs, they are horrendous, I'm thinking of paying up my contract with Orange just to get rid of them; super slow speed (averaging 0.2Mb/sec, constant disconnections, noise on my phone line and the only thing they can offer to help me is an IT illiterate Indian person sat in a call centre in Delhi reading off a flipin script. I am so mad with them I refuse to even report problems now. WHAT a mistake it was taking up their service. Rant over

Rant over to be fair they rely on the BT equipment but obviously any problems you have to go through them, odds are you'll have the same problems with any supplier using the same line and only BT will really be able to do much about it. I'm on talk talk despite the massive negative press mines been fine but even better I'm saving money on the bill compared to my old BT bill and that was without broadband. The only way of avoiding the BT network is through Virgin/NThell
pin
Not entirely true. Most large ISP's, certainly most mentioned here, terminate sessions from BT vi l2tp or in-span handover, the quality of network and kit as well as capacity at the provider will have an enormous bearing on the service you receive. Nothing on the providers side should affect your connection speed. Since MAX providers, assuming they have the capability to set it up properly, have been able to set and remove an IP profile for your connection. This affects throughput, the speed you are allowed to use, not your connection speed which sits in BT land. If you have a high connection speed but a low throughput, blame your provider. If you have a low connection speed (but know your line to be capable of a lot more) then get on to your provider and have them hassle BT - don't blame the provider for this, it is their problem to get BT to fix it, but that part is down to BT.
