Farmboy91
I had a massive problem with these last year, they travel alot further than you'd think and they fly pretty much all day and night, only resting in the very small hours. Through a combination of the rolled Up paper and go old fly/wasp killer I must of killed 100+ last year.
Tadorna
Why kill them? Leave them alone and they will leave you alone.

"carries enough venom to put an adult in hospital." ********. So does a honey bee if you are allergic to bee stings. I've been stung by them, it hurts but I didn't end up in hospital. Walker570
They are aliens, simple as that. Like grey squirrels, so destroy everyone you see. Now, I do leave our native hornets alone as they are more benficial to our environment than wasps.
Dekers
It is most unlikely there is just one, there will virtually guarantee be a nest in the area which will be relatively young, but will grow a lot over the next few months until it reaches maturity! The poster said it's European. Edited May 21, 2018 by Richie10
Walker570
I didn't want to argue but I also thought European in the photo. The aliens are much darker and larger.

John_R
Good point, I did confuse European with Asian.
WelshMike
For clarity the European Hornet is actually larger then the Asian Hornet (I saw an asian hornet set in a block of plastic at a recent talk and was surprised how small they are) and its the asian hornet that is likely to decimate honey bee numbers when (not if) they become widespread in the uk. As a beekeeper I am a fan of those who destroy wasps nests as soon as they see them. The fact is that while wasps are of some benefit they are not anywhere near as beneficial as honey bees. I have seen what wasps can do to a colony of bees and those who say that they do little harm are kidding themselves.
