ShaggyRS6
Have a look at the attached image, the area I am allowed to shoot is marked. Now, I have only been using an air rifle but feel the best way foward with rabbits on this land would be a 410. I say a 410 cos I want the noise to be kept low as there are horses int he feilds surrounding. Now I know people shoot with shotguns in this area as I hear them all the time. The owner has said I can try the 410 to see how the horses react. My question is, on the legal side, am I within my rights to use a shotgun within their boundary? The land is not large as you can see, but its not a "garden" size peice of land either.
Ferret Master
I know of no law that says you cannot use one providing the pellets don't leave the boundary of the land which you are allowed to shoot on. FM
ShaggyRS6
I guess my question is, does anyone else use a 410 on land that small?
al4x
it'll be fine, we shoot 12bores on worse bits than that.
ShaggyRS6
Cool, I just hope it does not scare the horses too much
pavman
Cool, I just hope it does not scare the horses too much you may wish to go for a hush power .410 a normal .410 puts out around the same noise as a 12G, link below http://www.bigginhill.co.uk/hush.htm
al4x
you can get a hushpower if its a problem or check if they are in at certain times. We shoot horse fields with the HMR but mostly have to just lamp it over the winter when the horses are in at night
ShaggyRS6
They are always out. I said I would take it up and give it a go first to see their reaction. Other than that a hushpoer it is, although would it fir my A&N?
Dave-G
Horses and cattle settle down to it soon enough when they realise they have not been harmed by it. Have the horse owner - or someone they trust nearby for comfort if you like before you fire the first shot. It's also amazing how much noise they will stand for while someone is feeding them polo mints.
al4x
horse owners themselves are pretty barmy if its a livery yard be very very careful. If you startle one and it does a ligament etc your insurance could get hit for a lot of money! Couple that with horsey women usually being anti shooting try and shoot when they aren't about
Dave-G
Depends on the woman really. If she's a poser she probably objects to most things in the countryside. Real horsewomen recognise the damage rabbits do to the land that could lead to a broken ankle on their horse.
mossy835
i have land with horses on and will not use a 12 gauge, just .22 rimmy for rabbits.
njc110381
How about FAC air rifles with a moderator? That would be my plan. You can get some with adjustable power, spot on in my opinion! A .410 is loud and doesn't give any more range than a 12ft-lbs air rifle.

lurcherboy
I have used a 12bore on smaller parcels of land than that Cupra. LB

Ferret Master
I need to get the ******* when they are running. into thick cover. I have gotten rid of all the "Air Rifle" bunnies Then get some ferrets and get all of them underground :yp: :o (I never get tired of that smilie ) You know you want to. I love potting bunnies with my air rifle but nothing beats the excitement of putting a ferret thats prepared to work its little heart out to ground that you have had since a kit. And people say I'm a miserable ****** because I can't wait til Autumn and the first frosts. B) It's the right time of year for ferret kits as well. Zapp
horse owners themselves are pretty barmy Couple that with horsey women usually being anti shooting try and shoot when they aren't about Two VERY true statements, I have this exact situation on one of my permissions! If in doubt, get a hushpower.
njc110381
You could get a moderated 12g if you're really keen!
malkiserow
I had a permission some time back which was a few fields where the horsey women surrounded in their fields. I tried to work with them and shoot when they were out.... it was bit of a pain. I also have 410 but use it rarely since it is almost as loud as a 12G and will still spook the hell out of an unsuspecting pony. Shooting a 9 gram load is very restricted, you can get heavier but they won't fit my 2 inch chamber. I recommend preserving your reputation and use the silent methods. good luck Malk
SPARKIE
horses wont be bothered by the gun i shoot stables 2/3 times a week 18 acres and have no problems with the horses at first they will run about a bit but the more you shoot it the less they will be bothered horses are very inquisitive and will come to have a look just be care ful of them messing about we keep horses on there aswell and the women that owns it says if anyone has a problem with me shooting the magpies or rabbits there to take it up with her shes upset a couple of people and now they just have to live with the fact im there oh i also lamp fox on there at night with a unmoderated .22wmr and the horses arnt bothered and theres approx 30 horses on the yard
mr smith
One of the farms i shoot has a number of horses on it,and like you was worried about blazing away near them. But the day came the woodies were making a nuisance of themselves in the next field and the farmer wanted them dealt with,so just made sure the shots were taken in the opposite direction and the horses never showed any sign of concern. And this was with a 12 bore. BSA Shaun
You could get a moderated 12g if you're really keen! My sentiments precisely Huspower 12g - http://www.saddleryandgunroom.co.uk/hushpower.htm
ShaggyRS6
I actually went out with my 12G. the horses looked at me as if I were stupid fireing something that noisey and then carried on about their business. Did not seem to effect them one bit. Happy days.
