with this lock down thing going on is anyone else trying to keep sane iv,e been busy putting a cleat wall into my shed but wanted a break so I dug out an old chisel [footprint make] that belonged to my dad who passed in 1989 so its got a bit of age to it .

it was in a terrible state ….. rusty the cutting edge was all chipped and the black and yellow paint was just about all gone from the handle . so after a few hours hand sanding then honing the edge back to life I sanded the handle bare got my oil finishing kit out and set about it

Good for you Hodge911.

No doubt that every time that you use one of your Dad's old tools, it will recall fond memories. Such things are precious.

There`s an apple orchard just round the corner from me that sells apple juice and cider in the summer where the guy that owns it collects old tools which are displayed in the shop.

It`s an absolute treasure trove of old and interesting tools.

However, I got him puzzled when I took an old rolled turnover tool that I used in the 60s for him to guess what it was. He didn`t have a clue.

Everyone on PW would, of course, have known immediately what it was.

There is a fascination with old tools and if I had my time over, that`s what I would collect.

hello, vintage moulding planes use to get a good price but the trade in vintage tools has not done well for years, there is a chap on Oxford market been selling old tools and his prices have reflected this,

That hammer handle looks like hickory to me but it could be ash.

My first thought was hickory but not at all sure .... its had 4 light coats of red root oil and has darkened ever so slightly but I like it I'm going to give it 2 more then the hardening oil pics to follow

it has a nice sheen as I did not want a " gloss " finish its had 5 thin coats of red root oil then 4 coats of the hardening oil with a few drops of red root oil added it has darkened ever so slightly but to a colour I really like
