Evening all , got a painting/print not too long ago and just wondered if anyone knew what sort of value it would have. It’s 30” by 22” in good condition. Peter Scott 1934. Any information will be appreciated.

Firstly is the print numbered ?    Even if it is the print is not worth a huge amount. We have a limited edition china figurine of a peregrin falcon we purchased 50 odd years ago and just went to get an appraisal and discovered it was not worth what we paid for it.   This limited edition business is a bit of a scam.

Thanks for the information guys, I don’t think it’s numbered at all. I just liked it and the price was good. It’s a fairly good size as well.

This was one of Scott's first and most successful prints. It was labelled rather oddly "Norfolk Spring-Shovellers" so "Spring-Shovellers" they became.

Brilliant thanks, living in Norfolk so suits the painting well.

I have two. Morning flight and Dawn chorus also the books to go with them. As said I don't think there of great value.

Hi Mellors,

Up until a couple of years ago I dealt in sporting art, more as a paying hobby than trying to make a living, and have bought and sold many prints by Scott. At auction I would pay around £50 for a signed print and sell on for about twice that. Unfortunately (as a potential investment) unsigned prints are very abundant, and sell for their decorative value only, maybe a few pounds depending on condition and frame.

However, what matters is if you like the picture on your wall, I still have a couple of Scott's myself, and think he was a wonderful artist.

Was given mine from the wife's aunts book shop many years ago. Both mine are in the wall and both signed. The accompanying books are also signed.

Before I moved I had twenty or more of varying sizes of Peter Scott's prints , most of them were bought at the auction in Kings Lynn for next to nothing , I don't think I paid more than a fiver for any of them and many of the smaller ones were only a couple of quid , if they are signed on the print then it don't normally add any value to the print , if it is signed in the White border around the print then it will add value , like a lot of things the prices go up and down over the years and sadly for Peter Scott's they are making a lot less money than they once did .

Like all ready said , you buy them for the pleasure they give and not expecting them to make you a lot of money , I have just had a look and the last one I bought was called Curlew Flying Over The Estuary , the size of the oak frame is 21 x 15 inches and I believe I paid about £3.00 , now the frame is worth more than the print .

If anyone is looking for original paintings, prints and books relevant to wildfowling by Scott and others, a good auction specialising in ornithology is held annually at Keys Saleroom in Aylsham, Norfolk. This year it's on 25th September. The catalogue goes online on their website a couple of weeks or so beforehand.
