Gordon R
My youngest has bought some cast iron bench ends. They have a couple of layers of old paint on them and he wants to renovate them and put some decent wood on. He rang to ask how much sandblasting would cost. My first reaction was to use paint stripper. He has already tried Nitromors - useless. I did suggest using my needle scaler, with a blowtorch to get out any intricate bits. He quickly dismissed my brilliant suggestion and asked where he could get it done. I can see where this is going - I will end up finding somewhere, dropping them off, paying, then collecting and spraying them. I would appreciate an alternative or knowledge of where I could get it done, if I have to have it done - 10 mile radius of Bolton Edited September 3, 2020 by Gordon R
NorfolkAYA
Shame you are not in Norfolk mate, would of done them at work for you. But yes it can be pricey, what we charge out of work is eye watering
The Heron
This is another one of those you get what you pay for, get them shot blasted and then sprayed by someone who knows what they are doing long term money saved
Rob85
What's wrong with some wire wheels in a grinder/power drill and some elbow grease? That needle scaler of yours would be great for the hard to reach parts or a dremmel with wire wheel attachments. If he's intent on throwing money at it there are places that will do a chemical dip to strip everything off
Old farrier
If they are cast iron ? gas blowtorch and wire brush easiest way to get the paint off 😊👍
enfieldspares
Wire brush for loose bits and just paint over the top with Hammerite or similar. Modern Nitromors is useless BTW. The old now banned stuff was the stuff to use.

TIGHTCHOKE
Gordon, work out the cheapest way to courier them to me and I will whack them through our bead blaster. If you can find it cheaper than a return trip to Peterborough then get it done at that place. Good luck
Gordon R
TIGHTCHOKE - I will check return carriage. Whether it is viable or not, I do appreciate the offer.
Demonic69
Have you looked at hiring a soda blaster? They weren't dear last time I looked and a couple of days a 2-3 tubs of media should sort you out? Might be cheaper/better to drive to TC and get a pro to take a look though
sky gipsy
Hi Gordon If you take them to ribble technology in Preston, they will strip them for you. A little further tham 10 mile but they are a good firm to deal with. https://www.google.co.uk/url?sa=t&rct=j&q=&esrc=s&source=web&cd=&cad=rja&uact=8&ved=2ahUKEwiThqWfiM_rAhWxsaQKHQrrDVYQFjAAegQIARAC&url=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.paint-strip.co.uk%2F&usg=AOvVaw3Wcp4IHk9Sa2cC9k6InkIf All the best. ferguson_tom
For little jobs like this the local blasters are normally happy to do them for a bit of cash if your not in a rush and they can do them when set up for another bigger job. Jacko3275
Put them on the pattern plate at a local shooting ground and go back for them in a few week old paint gone and lead coated against rust🤪🤪🤪
Gordon R
My youngest how now decided against spending money to strip the bench ends. Thanks TIGHTCHOKE - I am grateful for the offer. After spending all of two minutes with a butane blowlamp - he couldn't be bothered finding the propane blowtorch - he decided his presence was needed elsewhere. The ends sit in my garage and I can see I will have a bit of fun with the wire wheel, needle scaler and propane blowtorch when it surfaces.
