The old premises of G E Lewis I suspect. 32-33 Lower Loveday Street. I went there when George Lewis was still there. It became student flats in the 1990s or so. JohnfromUK Posted February 16, 2021 Report Share Posted February 16, 2021 Nowadays in the UK you can break the law for 'minor offences' at will and there is very little chance of being caught - and if you are caught, not much in the way of punishment in most cases. This includes theft, vandalism, many drugs offences, shoplifting, fly tipping, minor fraud etc. There is now 'lack of respect' for laws, because they have become voluntary. Locally, most minor theft (i.e. tools, sheds, house burglary, theft from cars, vandalism etc.) gets a crime number over the phone and told to claim on insurance. Most shoplifting isn't followed up - even when the offenders are known. Most drug use and minor dealing is ignored. And we are a 'low crime area'. The same mindset is applied to lockdown laws/rules. Little chance of being caught - and if you are fined - I read that only 3% of fines are actually paid. How many will be followed up? Don't hold your breath (though it might help avoid Covid!). Did watching Boris last night give you any confidence they really know what they are doing and as Tim Martin(Weatherspoons) said on talk radio, all of these making the decisions have never done a proper job in their lives and had to make a company work, provide jobs etc etc. They have just lived high off the public donations (tax) with little or no chance of losing their jobs. That might be what we the public expect and require and sometimes mistakenly believe, but the Police Chiefs Council don't care what you and I think. They've decided - arbitrarily I might add - that their priority is "Public Safety". It is of course just a soundbite as it's obviously an unachievable objective which is certainly uncalled for and in all probability, unwanted by the public. All transactions to be in cash". One of his 20 Bore "Light Magnum" guns. So twenty-six inch boxlock ejector, concealed third bite and chambered for the 2 3/4" 20 Bore one ounce cartridge. Weighed about 5lbs 14ozs from vague and maybe wrong memory. The 20 Bore Alphamax as it was or became. Sadly at six feet four inches and my father five feet ten inches it just didn't look right with me. Nor could the stock and action fit in its case when I'd extended the stock. So it was sold. I do wonder where it might be now. It was a very pretty gun. Shot my first left and right with it a cock and hen wigeon that I had stuffed over my own pond. So a special memory. They'll no doubt be fine, but a £200 fine that may or may not be collected is pointless as a deterrent. Like I said when I started the thread about lockdown working at bringing the infection rate down, it's the few like these that will keep us in lockdown longer.
