Cartridges - local or online ……… discuss………

Recommended Posts

I have always thought Just Cartridges have been the most expensive. When I bought some clay cartridges earlier in the year, JC were £32 per 1000 more expensive than a local gun shop. It really annoys me when they say there's no money in cartridges - simple maths says JC are making £32 extra profit over and above what my local shop was making.

For me and my mate it's local always.

we need them, they need us

this is a pic of a recent excursion to Malmo, Volvo XC90 with all seats folded down

Volvo XC 90

Kerb weight 1869 to 2156kg
Max gross weight allowed 2400 to 2660Kg

Allowing the greatest difference, that gives you just shy of 800Kg load.

A slab is between 8-10Kg for 28g loads+, so lets give benefit of the doubt at 8kg a slab. So around 400Kg on the rear axel alone, plus you and your mate at say 100kg each. That's without the extra dewalt stuff and whatever else you had....

Your suspension and handling must have been like a bag of dog poop. Did you change your tyre pressures?! I suspect that you were legally overweight though, I've never seen a vehicle at the lower end of a kerb weight value.....

(jealousy of your haul is obviously getting me nowhere!). Seriously though, please be very careful with that load, I believe your vehicle wouldn't be legal and with the wrong tyre pressures becomes dangerous.

For the OP? JC is always overpriced. My local ground does CompX cheaper than any other shop, and I support them for those carts. I also go to the local gunshop for cleaning equipment and carts. I will not however buy a jacket that is 50-80% more expensive to support them, I recently looked at a jacket that was nearly 100% (£150) more expensive than online, and whilst they may not be making that much I am not subsidising that.

They dont half shift some stock there!

Mistaken identity, I know the feeling!  Shot at Wyre yesterday and mistook a LOT of fresh air for clays 😂😉

A chap we shoot with now and then always uses JC, he has the spare cash and likes the convenience.

He is the only person I know that uses them all the time.

I used them just the once for a very large bulk order between friends and family. Back when Royal mail used to deliver. Driver wanted to dump them on the curb, said "not my job to carry to door" I said OK take them all back. JC was extremely unhelpful on phone while driver still here, made it all my fault for not living  on the grass verge and actually having the audacity to actually live in a house. I swore (quite literally and loudly) I'd never use them again.

The 2 best places I've found for any cartridges are:

Peter Coppin & Son Ltd

01507 462357

https://maps.app.goo.gl/iN7rp2SL79TNYe9E6

Stocks are huge and has all bores unlike many RFDs. Well worth a visit if you're ever in the area. Unfortunately a 2 hour drive each way for me so i dont get there a lot.

And

Philip Webster Gunsmiths Ltd

01953 600929

https://maps.app.goo.gl/jko7UtVXXWezKyge7

Good stocks at good prices and the best and most reasonable proper gunsmith I've found in recent years. An actual gunsmith rather than a part fitter. Again for me a long drive 3 1/2 hours but I'd rather drive the distance if I need a repair as he's trustworthy and reliable. £220 a 1000 for my clay carts and £90 for my favourite 32 x 5s RC Snipe per 250.

I use them mostly, our local shops have decided they will match Just Cartridges prices, so whenever you want stuff they just look up the JC price and that’s what you pay.

So you either buy local from them, or from JC at the exact same price.

I suppose it stops people walking out as they get the same carts for same price there and then, and can’t be bothered to wait.

The alternative of buying from neither would be to drive miles away, and then the small shops often have limited stock or poor choice etc.

JC is very convenient. I can usually pick any weird and wonderful assortment of cartridges, and then have them dropped off onto my door on a day of my choosing, whilst also being in work at the same time. This is a major advantage being able to be in work (working from home) and have them delivered as otherwise I’d have to take approx 2+ hours out of my day running around.

So I gain several hours of my time back, don’t have to use my fuel to collect them and get exactly what I want.

I think the saving of my time alone is worth we’ll over £30, that’s without taking account of the fuel saving with current prices.

It’s not so economical when you spend 2 hours of your time and £20’ on fuel, just to save £30 on 1000 carts.

Obviously if your buying 10,000+ In one go it’s worth going to get them yourself as the gentleman above did.

I wouldn’t say I’m happy, but what’s the alternative?

The local shop charges the same as JC.

Alternative to go massively out of the way to save a few quid? With current price of fuel you’d have to put in a major order to have any worth while savings.

I think the best idea may be to group together with a few mates and buy a pallet (is that 10,000?) and split between yourselves.

Yes indeed, we used to do 11000 or so, but the van used to struggle a bit on the hills.

I will not use Just Cartridges as they are far too expensive!

Tc I heard you hold more “shells” than just cartridges anyway?

local farm supplies head of parts and cartridges stores is is keen shooter- we happen to prefer the same hull sporting 100s

buying 1k at a time a good deal cheaper than just cartridges- and a damn good chin wag

I also tend to get a nod before prices go up ( if you get my drift).

  • 2 weeks later...

Well today I went to Malmo for some clay cartridges.

Didn't get as any where near as many as diver one.they were cheaper than anywhere on line and I consider them to be cheaper than a lot of other places.Even factoring in some diesel which I cannot count as it was a lovely run out in beautiful countryside.Well pleased and usual excellent customer service.
