Haven't read every reply yet but the 1 thing that I still struggle with around the decision to remove winter fuel payments from pensioners that don't qualify is how exactly is this saving money to fill a black hole?

The government is asking those that may not qualify to check, since people that may be eligible for pension credit that aren't already claiming it should now claim.

Also to check that you may be able to get help in the way of grants and other benefits or government funding.

So by now giving out more money to people that were not claiming these things before, the government is essentially paying out more money instead of saving money to fill a black hole. Which just astounds me.

It was never about saving money.  It was in the Tory budget figures.  The 'black hole' is essentially of Labour's making by awarding large inflation busting increases to various 'public service' (in which I include rail staff) employees.

Pensioners (as a group) tend to mainly vote 'other than Labour' - they have seen what Labour do.  It was making a political point.  The actual money saved against the (alleged) black hole is not game changing, and as you rightly say, the saving will actually be much less than the simple figure.

Same with the 'hit the non doms' policy - which I understand analysts now say will produce virtually zero income, but will drive out wealth creators.

Just wait till the deaths start hitting the front pages around Christmas

It's Labours way of tackling the NHS under capacity, the care home under capacity, the local authority social care under capacity and the growing pensions liability.

Price people out of living to an old age at which they become needy.

Well chatting today with one old wag over half a pint, he postulated that Labour seemed hell bent on sucking every bit of enjoyment out of his way of life to give it to everyone else who shows up?

They seem to be losing a lot of fans due to the winter fuel allowance and doing nothing to stop the boats
