Dougy Posted November 12 Report Share Posted November 12 I thought i would do a bit of vacuuming while Mrs D was at her sisters, got the vacuum out, a Hoover 2200w, a decent vac we've had for 15 years did a brill job, a proper beater sweeper. Anyway as usual checked it needed emptying and as per usual it did, so went to empty the container, 1/2 full of dog hair and usual fluff and stuff. Oh !!! brill a major part missing rendering the vac an ornament , no doubt hence it was only 1/2 full, checked the dustbin lovely job. not in there so must have gone last week on grey bin day. It must have been chucked out with the fluff and dog hair. Wasnt the wife, she says wasnt her, so i've sent Buster and Harley to bed with no tea tonight cus it must have been them, never though a Labrador would be able to lift the bin off the dustbin but they must have helped each other. £250 on a new vac, bloody brill im trying not to spend my hard earned now ive packed in work. Can't the same you find the same model on eBay with a burned out motor and then cannibalise it for you missing bit? No they stopped making anything over 900w i think it was about 2 years ago, just in case it sucked the Ozone into the vac bag !!! l have been searching, found a part, £ 54 !!! keep looking, one on the bay S&R for £20 Quote Link to comment Share on other sites More sharing options...
Gordon R Posted November 12 Report Share Posted November 12 It could have been worse. Many, many years ago when both lads were still at home, my wife had gone shopping. My youngest dropped something on the carpet and I said it would need hoovering up. We got out the hoover, plugged it in and pressed the pedal. Nothing happened. I changed the fuse, checked the socket to no avail. After about 20 minutes my eldest spotted a switch cunningly hidden under the handle. Lo and behold, the hoover cracked into life. When this limit came in (2014 ended anything over 1600w and 2017 anything over 900w) I bought two VAX of the old school full power 2000w VAX and put one boxed, new, up in the attic. Blimey that long ago, it had an impact on the job I was doing Ops manager (Cleaning Voyager 220 & 221 fleet of trains). I stocked up before the restrictions kicked in. London Best Posted November 13 Report Share Posted November 13 I can work the vacuum cleaner, but a few years ago when Mrs. LB had to stay in hospital for a few days I had to phone her and get her to ‘talk me down’ on the dishwasher as I hadn’t a clue how to use it. Miserableolgit Posted November 13 Report Share Posted November 13 I can guarantee that every time I go to use something around here and find it broken, clogged or failing to work nobody knows anything about it. We gave up on the plastic bag less machines a long time ago as Mrs tends to be a bit cack handed and breaks them. We bought a Kirby G5 off eBay, a bit like an old fashioned aluminium Hoover and it’s been very good. It’s built like a tank and all the bits are replaceable. The other main machine is an older Henry that I inherited from my mother. Being older it is pre restriction so has decent suction- as the actress said to the bishop- fna, fnar. Due to complaints about the Kirby being a bit weighty (it has power drive so there’s no need to haul it over there place) in moment of madness I bought a smaller rechargeable machine made by Shark, it’s rubbish and clogs up like mad. Dougy Posted November 14 Author Report Share Posted November 14 (edited) New Vacuum arrived this morning 😃 I was trying to find images of one similar to what we used to have as a kid and found these 2, we had both the floor buffer/polisher although it was blue and the vacuum cleaner, my Nan (mums side) where Hoteliers so i am sure these were inherited from that side. It has a clutch that when engaged via a pedal provides a degree of drive in forward and reverse to the back wheels. Brush bar and belt and cable are all easily available and replaceable. I think my wife filled in a card for a draw at the Ideal Homes exhibition 30+ years ago and a guy came to our house to do the demonstration. We were very impressed but the £700 price tag was like 4 months mortgage payment so it was a no. Later on I saw one for sale in the yellow paper (remember those) for £170 with all the attachments. We used it for a while but her indoors found it too heavy to cart up and down the stairs so it sat in the cupboard until we eventually sold it on. We've had numerous Dysons since but I really liked the Kirby apart from the weight issue. I've no doubt the one we had way back then is still going strong somewhere - or probably languishing in a cupboard under someone's stairs.
