marsh man
I gave the ole Stew a miss tonight and just had a bit of slow cooked beef with a few Carrots and filled the rest of the hole up with a piece of Apple and Blackberry pie with custard , not up to Simons standard but the ole site is a bit on the quite side tonight so there yer go . verdict , Pie was nice and the beef and carrots, but again the oven chips have got a lot of room for improvement , but I will get there , just need persevering
bruno22rf
Oven chips are the work of Beelzebub himself IMO (unless you deep fry em)
islandgun
A few roast spuds would rounded that off nicely, the pie looks great. I wouldn't mind a slice just now

I wouldn't mind a slice just now You are right I G with the roast spuds , but my fruit pie was three days old so I didn't want a to bigger tea so I could leave enough room . , I find not being that hungry and being by yourself that the motivation to spend ages on one meal is no longer there , don't get me wrong , I still eat some good food and don't skimp on anything but buying a ready meal and then adding to it as required seem the best of two evils , fish chips and Peas tomorrow with the rest of the fruit pie . Nope,,,, never heard that expression before 🤔😆🤣 Just because your oven/cooker is reasonably new, doesn't mean that there's nothing wrong with it,,,, which I'm sure there is. Either that, or ,,,, it's user error 🥳😂

TIGHTCHOKE
Chip abuse, it's bloody everywhere.......................... But on a more serious note; Some good advice there john, either the oven is not hot enough or the chips need to be in the oven for longer. I do mine in the air fryer, no pre-heat, just one portion in for 15 minutes, give the basket a shake half way through. I think you need to stick to one make of chips, practice and get used to getting lovely crisp chips when you have mastered you oven. You may even enjoy practicing. Your enjoyment of the pudding is similar to me, I do love a good pie, whether it be apple, apple and blackcurrant or cherry. Add a little drizzle of honey across the top before putting the custard on. Smashing.
bruno22rf
I think that the instructions on oven chips is often a little optimistic, I would imagine it's deliberate so your average housewife thinks they wont take as long to cook. Aldi have some entertaining times in the past, some of their frozen chicken strips say 30 minutes but if you try that they can still peck you as you put em on your plate. When I do chips (rarely these days) I deep fry then put them on kitchen tissue in a warm oven, then heat a frying pan with salt, tomato powder, curry powder or whatever flavour you fancy then throw the chips in, pop the lid on and shake/heat them for a couple of minutes. I'd sort out a new baking tray, one the chips can't lie flat on.

marsh man
Do you know what ? , I never dreamt chips could create virtually a thread all by themselves , I have had quite a restless night just thinking about them and will consult Mc Cann's for advice , I am sure all the advice above is correct and I now have my own theories , the main problem is under cooked , this could be because I am putting them in the oven while they are frozen and at the temp I am doing the main meal , tonight I will change tactics , both the fish and the chips will come out of the freezer this morning and the chips will be go in at the temp recommended in a pre heated oven , we have fought many battles over the years with several this year alone and came out bruised but still in one piece , so the ongoing crisis we are having with frozen chips will soon come to a conclusion , like Winston Churchill once said , We will not be defeated . JKD
Hahaha 😆,,,, this is turning into 'CHIPGATE' 😲🤣 MM,,,, my chips take around 30 minutes @ 200° fan oven. Sausages take 30 minutes @ 180/190°,,,, so things go in the same oven at different times, tweaking the heat setting during the process 🫡 Of course I could use the other oven on my double oven cooker 😝🤣
TIGHTCHOKE
MM, they are meant to be cooked straight from frozen in a hot oven. I doubt defrosting them will improve things, try it anyway, but don't be too surprised if going against the manufacturers guidance doesn't help. GOOD luck. old'un
we use nothing else but McCain oven chips, set oven to 190c fan, cook for 30 minutes on metal tray and they always come out perfect. Get yourself an oven thermometer and test if your oven is coming up to temperature, one of these will do…. https://www.amazon.co.uk/Hotloop-Digital-Thermometer-Resistant-300°C/dp/B01MR6X4DU/ref=sr_1_8?c=ts&dib=eyJ2IjoiMSJ9.vBGpiUZT1DsfNll2T-bZwuGLt1HPHBtGnzh6YIlSULAKiCyw7dkitHGVP5ktxnPRHebgmGkmtxtIAEN5ybqK4BLmjnSo7dCVmCaNXeh2gr6NsoI1MrH6QXGO4H9ah37H7wElmvwrEa6ti8PZNMlYnZ5v_f-HOrMOCBVaOs2U8FOC02RW_QXTRjD9NQqpmggBYLWm3dwZeeFBZfomCKzQPpTQ_APR3ad1Coild_UJ3gDtDk82MVzeVxQPN-CvMVtfL-F8ZMXrCWn1K3Bcfp6qQRAT37M_RNJwTBkIP3hmfmI.92jouzM3Fjl8ZB2K9AgXiiDhOm8qv4r6tMCh1c72bUY&dib_tag=se&keywords=Oven+Thermometers&qid=1733915907&s=kitchen&sr=1-8&ts_id=3187141031
