Blood thinners and shooting

Recommended Posts

I’m currently taking blood thinning medication due to an upcoming heart operation in Jan, I’m only in them from yesterday Untill mid Feb, can I still shoot on them without and damage?

I know to ask my GP, or med center in my case, but just wanted to know if anyone had some real life situations while using them?

I have read you bruise easier, but just after some advice if anyone is or was on them and still shooting?

Shooting on blood thinners was not a problem for me, I did  have a semi auto and not a side by side, just in case I bruised, or a thicker coat. I suggest to carry one or two plasters in case you cut yourself and be careful of barbed wire etc if out in the fields.

Thankyou!

I will be using a O/U, and plenty of padding, I may dip down to 24gram Fblu’s instead of my usual 28gram Superbs.

Ill only be shooting on clay grounds, but I will take plasters with me, didn’t think of that!

Thanks for the advice!

What blood thinner are you on , they don't  thin the bloody , they just stop it from clotting to easy . If you cut yourself  it just mean it takes a little longer  to clot and stop . You may bruise  easier.  You may also become a little  dizzy on rising.

I am on Exoxoban, I have no side effects from taking it so far

Been on the meds for 7 years following a mild mini-stroke with no problem for me either. I did have a TAVI (femoral artery route) a couple of years back and unlike yourself I had to stop taking them for a few days before the op'. If necessary, please Google TAVI - too much to explain with the arthritis in my fingers at the mo'.

From my understanding if you accidentally get shot whilst out shooting and you are on blood thinners you will probably die! But there again you probably would anyway😄

Seriously I see no reason to alter your lifestyle at all with prescription blood thinners. I have been on them for five years since my mahoosive heart attck..

I get the joke, not taking that away.

Shotgun wounds are going to be particularly gnarly, however tourniquets and celox still work great even on persons on blood thinners. Of course, centre mass at close range isn't going to be able to be treated with first aid!!

To the OP, think of it more as an anticoagulant, rather than a blood thinner. The thinning element is around the lessening of clotting, and it does NOT thin/dilute the blood. Yes it can make bruising easier, and yes injuries bleed more. Like most wounds, direct pressure is the best result, it just means you may need to do it for longer, or seek secondary aid.

I don’t bruise, but I didn’t know if being in certain meds will cause bruising.  That’s all

Thanks John! Hope your keeping well!

Thanks for the advice, I’m getting Military background from your terminology?

Thanks all, I’m only on them for 9 weeks Untill I get my heart ablation following my diagnosis of PAF.

Close enough, with various links.

In addition my ex-wife has been on them from a youngish age, and we had similar concerns. I think the doctor was quite blunt in saying that we shouldn't think about what it may do to her, but rather what's possible (such as DVT as an example) if you don't take it.

Final thought? If you get "excess" bleeding from a cut, get a knock to the head, "small car accident/bump" just go to A&E or at least call 111. There's a risk of internal bleeding for knocks to the head for example, and just not worth messing with. I am not trying to scaremonger, just to say be more aware for the 9 weeks!

Good luck with the heart ablation! Wishing you good health and a speedy recovery. 🙏

I’m the same Marshman, I asked my consultant and he confirmed that I shouldn’t feel the cold anymore than previously. But he also confirmed that most people did say they felt the cold more after starting the tablets. Very strange.

Not necessarily true if you are taking anti-coagulants.

I can handle this mild weather with no problems at all but when the temp drop to near freezing then it is a different matter , I put gloves on first thing in the morning when I take my dog out and my hands are cold inside my gloves , last Saturday I put on two jumpers and my Musto hooded coat and while I was on the move I was alright but having recently having two stents put in I am still a little on the frail side , still it haven't stopped me from going out and I feel better more or less each day ,I just do what the body can do without over doing it .    MM
