Gun shops are on their knees as it is, if license fees do go up to £400 that will be the final nail for shooting in the UK 🇬🇧 I was going to invest in a new clay gun in the new year but not now simply not worth the hassle & cost of keeping a shotgun certificate 🤮

My local gun shop is booming - and so is our shoot

I think you'll find it has been "suggested", not aware that it has been "authorised".

The Government want to get to "full recovery of costs" to the applicant.

I know it has been suggested, but I read somewhere, maybe on the clay shooting forum that it had been auth’d to £400?

100%.
Im still giving out clay lessons, and using steel cartridges, as the 21gram cartridges have very VERY little recoil too

Hi I think I read as well that the powers to be are pushing for every gun or rifle you have to have a individual  licence in the future .So will BASC just except that as well and just go with the flow as usual .  Cheers

Where have you got this from?
Think about it; most licensing authorities  can’t administer the system as it stands currently. What the suggestion in your post would do is at least double, treble, quadruple etc etc  the paperwork for each firearm an individual owned. Totally unworkable.

Its a public safety issue placed unrequested onto us.

Do their protester, carnival, music venue, football crowd control safety attendances, motorway patrol, helicopters get paid for by their users?

Hi folks is this true that BASC is backing the rising of the licenceing fees of £400 seen it on fieldsport channel ?.cheers teddy

No that is not true.

What is happening is that there could be legislative proposals ahead to increase firearms licensing fees in England, Wales and Scotland - and the way this is being approached by the government is wrong - and BASC has been intervening to stop it happening in this way.

The £400 figure is speculation based on an article in The Telegraph on 17 December. This was in relation to a written ministerial statement in Parliament on the Provisional Police Grant Report (England and Wales) 2025-26 by the Home Secretary which included the following:

"Firearms licensing fees have not increased since 2015 and are now significantly less than the cost of the service provided by police forces. This funding deficit is impacting the effectiveness of police firearms licensing controls and the crucial role they play in safeguarding the public. We therefore intend to lay a statutory instrument when parliamentary time allows to increase firearms licensing fees to provide full-cost recovery for police forces, in line with our manifesto commitment. The additional revenue raised will be retained by police forces to support the important improvements needed in firearms licensing".

No figures are mentioned in the above statement.

On 20 December, in a letter to BASC, the Home Office outlined the government’s intention to introduce a statutory instrument to raise fees to achieve full-cost recovery for police forces, referencing the above written ministerial statement.

No figures were mentioned and there has been no stakeholder consultation, public consultation or transparency on what the rise in fees will be, which could be tabled as soon as 6 January, when parliament returns from recess.

Not true. You seem to be on a mission to misinform forum members this evening.

We'll have a choice if this is implemented, either pay up or lose your licence/s / firearms. £400 / 5 years equates to £80 per year or £6:66 per month/£1:66 per week. I begrudge paying this, especially at the poor service that is offered, but, if I have to pay this, then I will. My firearms and the enjoyment I get using them means more to me than £1:66 a week. I realise that there may be some people who cannot afford this, or maybe decide that the little time they use their firearms does not justify the fee.

I'd say it most definitely could happen.. here in Ireland the firearms licencing changed in circa 2009.  Prior to  that Our guns were always licensed individually,  so first gun was €26 and every gun after that was €6, all done annually. So for example 4 guns to license would cost €44. Then they changed it,with a whole pile of not necessary paperwork to apply for a new and renewal,  at at a cost of €80 per firearm, but changed to a 3 year license.  So now it went from €44 per annum for 4 guns ×3 = €132 to the  new and more complex and far less efficient license system to cost €320 for 3 year license.. it doesn't have to make sense for the power to be to make a cluster **** of everything.  No matter where you live.
