I get the occasional snap box from an old boy that I give rabbits too.

I have no idea if they are hard hitting regarding the target but they don't seem that hard on the shoulder when compared to 36grm Rotties.

When I make the occasional visit to my local clay ground I always stick a few into my cartridge bag to remind the other shooters how quiet modern cartridges are :good:

A bloke I used to shoot with at Worsley was given a load of very old Baikal cartridges by an old boy that lived near him. We tried a few out at Worsley one day and they were unbelievable. They nearly knocked you onto your Harris and there was a huge belch of yellowish smoke and a vile stink :good:

Couldn't even see if we'd hit anything, it was a right pea souper

Deafening as well - sounded like a bomb going off.

We were told that if we persisted with them, we would be escorted from the ground   :good::angry::lol:

Great fun, the old Baikals, killed like a 3"! Very impressive on the foreshore after dark, the two foot flame, shower of confetti and the smell, enough to make a labrador puke. The wad was made of compessed cardboard and disintegrated when fired, the powder was flat cut green flake. The first time that these were imported (well, the first time that I saw them) was after the accident at the Eley works in 1973, when you could not get cartridges for love or money. They may have been around earlier than that though. As I remember, they were a lot cheaper than Eley cartridges, I still have a box or two up in the loft. As far as I know, they are no longer imported into the UK.

Sellier and Bellot are still imported by Edgar Brothers, although the price is now up with the others, a phone call to them will reveal the name of your nearest stockist.

Sellier are made in the Czech republic, Baikal were made in Russia.

Northener; The box of Alphamax that you have, can be dated to the month of manufacture by the code stamped on the inner flap, put it on here and I will tell you the month/year.

As a matter of interest, Eley Grand prix in 1969, were £3.17.8p (£31.87/1000) per 100, Baikal, I believe, were around £21?

Another memory jerker for the more senior (senile?) members among us

Some nice old stuff there, probably worth a few quid these days :good:

Is that black Eley Tracer what it's name says it is?

Surprisingly, they are worth very little, there are so many about.

The Eley tracer is what it says, they were made during the war for training turret gunners in bombers and anti-aircarft gunners, to show that you need lead to hit a moving object.

The one in the photo was made more recently by Eley, between1967 and 1970, if memory serves (which it rarely does). I'll see if I can dig one of the WW2 ones out of the loft and put it on.

There you go blue, an advert from 1967, see the poor choice we had in those days? The Tracer came in packs of 10, size 7 shot only, ounce and 1/8th only. Skeet came in size 9 , 1 & 1/8thoz only. Trapshooting also 1 & 1/8th oz, shot sizes 6,7,& 8

From the look of the varnish dip on the real brass and the shot number at the crimp end, I'd say that was middle 1960's. Does the headstamp have 'Eley Kynoch ICI, with 12, 12' either side, or just 'Eley Kynoch 12' ?

FC

It just says eley Kynoch 12 on the base

Dont have the box just have the single cart :good:

I've got some in my garage.

Baikal cartridges were superb, I used to work for the sole importer and have shot 1000's of them.

If only you could still get them, there is nothing anywhere near as hard hitting on the market these days

That would have been Fred Schafle? Old laughing boy himself? He had the sole agency for Baikal guns too for many years if I remember correctly?

That dates it between 1963 and 1978, without the code on the box, that is as close as you will get. After '78 they had ELEY(twice) and 12 (twice)on them. From 1927 to 1963 they had "12 ELEY-KYNOCH 12" and an ICI emblem in a circle.

By eck!!! Baikal cartridges!!!!!

I was given my first shotgun at the tender age of fifteen, which was a single barrel Baikal. And funnily enough at the time, Baikal cartridges were all I used to shoot, as they were far cheaper than Eley’s. Good job they made them barrels as thick as they did… like tank barrels!

I remember trying other cartridges, and no matter what I tried, they never stood up to the fierce report that you get with the Baikal’s…. good job I was a stout young lad!

A funny story about a Baikal, but years on (when I was about 21 some 24 years ago) I was seeing a very nice young filly from Glossop north Derbyshire, and every weekend I would take the 60 mile journey from my house to go “see†her. On one of my weekends up there, my girl and I were at a country pub, and saw a leaflet offering anyone a chance to have a go at clay shooting, which took place every Sunday on the paddocks across the road. I said I really would like a blast at that, so we turned up the next day. When we arrived at the gate we were greeted by a guy who said it was £5 for 25 shots, and the gun thrown in. Would you believe it, it was the same single barrel Baikal as I had been shooting for the last six or so years. Anyway, the guy at the gate entrance to the paddock showed me how to open the gun, told me what to do, what not to do etc etc…. I just smiled and nodded, not mentioning that I had shot before (just about every weekend since I was about eight, but never at a clay shoot). Just thinking about this gives me the shudders now…. What would the cops make of that? Some person turning up at the side of the road, paying £5 and being handed a shotgun and 25 cartridges???

Anyway, got to the first stand, and there were two very well dressed gentlemen who were both very well equipped with what looked like quite a few £k’s of attire and two beautiful looking O/U shotguns! They both went first, I forget the score, but something like a three and a four bird respectively. The clays were straight across, right to left, orange, and low.

One of them then said to me it was now okay for me to shoot, and even showed me how to load the gun, point, say “pullâ€, and told me to just do my best etc.

Five shots, five dusted clays… you should have seen the look on these guys faces, me in jeans, dock martins and a leather jacket, using a farmers old single barrel!!!!

These poor ******* looked completely and utterly gutted! They never said a word to me, just turned and walked off. :good:

That has to be something I will always remember…… sorry for the digression, just that the Baikal cartridges bought bake a memory… she was a real stunner too (the girl).

PS I still have a couple of boxes of the Baikal cartridges from back when i was 15.... i wont ever shoot them i guess.... be a shame.

I remember the old Baikal cartridges very well :good: .....very loud, shower of confetti, lots of smoke and flame.... and a dirty barrel !

and yes they were banned at some of our local clay shoots.

But we used to find Sellier Bellot had an even worse trait...... sometimes the shot would ball up with horrific results on Pigeons or Rabbits... i mean what basically amounted to a solid slug of lead hitting a pigeon 25 -35 yds out and being lucky if you could find the wings and feet !

Didn't happen to them all, but often enough to to make us stop using them.... may have been a duff batch.

very good cart there is only one place i know that sells them and they are 40 mile away

You mean they are still available?

FM

Sellior and Bellot are still available, Edgar Brothers imports them, I was under the impression that Baikels stopped being exported from Russia when they felt the economic squeeze several years back, I seem to remember that the price was subsidised by the state.

Boy, do I remember these bloody things!

Basically, 4s were great for all-round wildfowling and foxing. To use them on pigeon would be a case of '....pigeon? What pigeon?'.

I can't find a single stockist in this country. Budget Guns and Tackle in Colchester used to sell them years back, but I think that was stock clearance.

On the marsh, they lit the place up at flight-time, it was like using as muzzleloader firing a tracer!

Loud, dirty but affective. I have known people to still bring the odd box to clay shoots, much to the chagrin of fellow guns!

Someone was using them this week and standing behind him I initially thought his mates had slipped a couple of 50 gram Magums into his pocket ! They were earth shattering, everyone kept laughing after every shot  I wear good ear muffs with double foam on top of custom moulds and I ended up pressing my hands into my head as he shot ! I do recall them as being loud but age hadn't sapped their powder.

Nice to see an old post brought back to life!

Old post or not they bring back some good memories, The first gun I bought was a Baikal 12g o/u, It was in the 80's when Uttings had a shop in Norwich, In I went with £200 and came out with £1 change and a nice shiny gun, Right now for some cartridges so off to my local RFD - "Can I help you" - "Yes I need some cartridges for my shotgun" - "What gun is it ?" - "Its a Baikal 12 bore" - "We have some Baikal cartridges here" Baikal cartridges in Baikal Gun, Sounds good to me, Chamber size, Shot size wasn't even mentioned, Parted with the money and home I came, over the fishing lakes i went with mates who all wanted a go (remember this is the early 80's) Loaded gun with cartridges, aimed and..................JESUS..! All ducks on the lakes took flight, All horses in the nearby paddocks took off faster than a greyhound and all the fish on top suddenly became bottom feeders, Out of everyone who had a go im the only one who still shoots, I just thought it was normal so got on with it, how times change. lol
