Vegeta
I am currently trying to save up a deposit for a house so I am as tight as a duck's rear end in a hurricane. Saying that I would spend a little on an everday 4x4 if i could find a suitable one. I drive 50 miles a day to and from work. This would have to be able to cope with both work and play. It would have to be affordable no.1 so we are talking about maybe a 7-10 year old one It would need to be cheap to run so the smaller the engine the better (would never be towing anything) Has to fit 2 people and all their hunting clobber The only thing that jumps to mind is a Jimny. But these are really small inside I hear they are capable off road though, what are you thoughts on this, have I been misled? How many litres are the petrol tanks and how many miles do you get to a tank in normal driving? Do you find them big enough? Are there other alternatives, is the Daihatsu Terios an alternative. It is 4x4 but has no high low box so is not as good off road. it appears bigger though and is meant to be reasonably economic Just wondering should i just give up the chase and wait a few years until the house is built/bought. monkeyjaimz
I've got a short wheelbase fronty does everything I need it to. 2L engine does 100 miles on £20 not the cheapest but a damn site better than the navara I used to feed You can pick them up fairly reasonably i think, hope this helps. Pick em up cheap as chips now: For example: ebay item: Item number: 370012412438 http://imageserver.autoexposure.co.uk/auto...95889957_1b.jpg Edited January 10, 2008 by claypop
Big_Sam
A nice Series III landy will only set you back about £1000. But you will have to get used to driving at 40mph..... and getting 10mpg.....whilst stopping every 5 mins to pick up a bit that fell off.... al4x
50 miles a day in a series 3 if he's not got piles yet it wouldn't be long The ssanyong might be a good option and cheap as chips with a good engine
Wookie
I'm going to second Monkey on this one. I've got a 2000 Frontera DTi limited (cost me 650 notes) and it's a great car. As much as I love Landys, I'm going to probably get another one when it dies. Hell, leather seats, aircon, 37 mpg and it cruises at 70 all day. Cranfield
I think for a fair response, you have to declare what you believe is an "affordable" sum of money. The vehicles are out there, but the Sellers want money for them.

tikkamark
A 98 or 99 landcruiser would be the right job vegeta there not to bad on diesel when your not towing anything and are the most reliable things on the road, there also excellent off road

tinbum71
I've got a '96 Jeep Cherokee that cost me a grand off Ebay. It has all the leather and toys and goes where most wont. Ok, mines the 4l petrol which aint the most eco-freindly, but there are lots of LPG ones out there and if you get a deisel one it'll do just under 30mpg in comfort. Because it isn't a common rail diesel it'll run on home made veggie fuel (just add solvent such as 5-10% unleaded to thin fuel) for economy comparable to a Fiesta. Just don't touch the 2.5 petrol! Uneconomical, fragile and slow.

Gordon R
I have owned a Discovery and fine vehicle it was. Just got rid of a Vauxhall Frontera (Isuzu) 2.2 Turbo Diesel. 38mpg, quicker on road than the Disco, far better handling and drives like a car. They had an awful reputation prior to 1995 and 1998 onwards are the best. I have just bought car number 89 and the Frontera was the most reliable, cheapest to run out of the lot. You can pick up a 1999 TD with decent mileage for around two grand. A lot of car for your money. I used to tow a large box trailer for both my sons' motocross bikes. NIce 4 wheel drive option for getting out of muddy paddocks. I was genuinely sorry to see it go.
