LeeinVA
What are the laws regarding blacvk powder? I think you can have Pyrodex, which is a propellant, fairly easy.. Go with the Remington 1858.. She has a back strap and more accurate
DaveK
I'd have back what I had before the ban. S&W 686 Tanfoglio Equaliser CZ85 Glock Model 22 Desert Eagle Sig 220 Lorraine would want hers back as well: S&W 686 IMI Jericho Glock Model 22 Glock Model 26 S&W 4506 I suppose given the choice of one we'd both argue about either the S&W686 or the Glock Mod 22 and the Glock would probably win with both of us Edited February 4, 2009 by DaveK

Cannon
Living in Northern Ireland we don't have to worry about this because we are not part of the UK mainland. The only handgun I own atm is a Beretta Model 71 Jaguar in .22, but what I would really like is a Beretta 90two with the laser in place of the recoil guide. I could get one, but they cost nearly £1000
LeeinVA
Holy ****.. For that amount why not go with a heavier calibre
Cannon
Only reason it costs so much for beretta is because of the supplier. Any other makes such as Walther or Colt etc are generally cheaper.

DaveK
686's were .357 as was the Desert Eagle. Awesome beastie even in the lower calibre. No recoil but the shockwave that hit anyone stood to the side was nobody's business. Very fussy about ammunition though. Needed minimum 158gn bullet heads to build the pressure to cycle it. Thems was the days. Dancake, the Beretta 92 is actually quite disappointing in my opinion. I tried one once with a view to buying it, loaded a magazine, fired 3 rounds, unloaded it and gave it back. I thought the Bruno blank firers were better than the real thing. Edited February 4, 2009 by DaveK
Cannon
I got that impression when I first fired a 96, but when I held the 90two it just felt right. Never fired it though thats the only thing, but for aesthetics IMO its hard to match
Baldrick
For beautiful engineering, the Sig P210. For day-to-day practicality, a Kimber Custom TLE II in .45 ACP. I carried a Browning Hi-Power for some time, which in its standard service configuration is comically inaccurate when compared to modern European designs. Lee, what handgun calibre do you think is the one to own, if you were (tragically) limited to just one pistol? 10mm? .40 S&W? I'd go for .45 ACP. I notice you have mentioned two standard issue sidearm's to the British and American forces. Could I ask how they performed relistically? The colt .45 was a heavy round with knock down power i know but is accuracy severly reduced? Baldrick, I see that you mentioned that the Browning Hi-Power was inaccurate? It was also issued to specialist army units as well as regular army I believe throught the 70's & 80's was'nt it? Regards
steve_b_wales
In the good old days when handguns were legal, I used to own a Smith & Wesson 686 in .357 magnum, a Ruger Blackhawke in .44 magnum and a Beretta 96 semi-auto in.22 caliber. My favourite was the .357.
Ozzy Fudd
Mine is the Smith & Wesson Model 19 in .44 Mag.. dad had a .44 smith and wesson when i was a kid in northern ireland were still allowed handguns; to get one you need to be a member of a gun club that has access to ranges, and go to the ranges alot. a couple of people i know have them, one has a glock 17, another has a colt python .357 and a .22 beretta if i got a pistol id go for a revolver in .38 special probly, though havnt thought too much about it
Beardo
i'd probably go with a Sig P229 or a P226 .40 either the Elite Dark or SCT models
Wookie
If I wanted something on a budget, I'd be looking at one of those Ruger .45ACPs... Whether it would be a P90 or a P345 I don't know yet. Part of me wants an HK USP SOCOM or Tactical in .45 ACP, but only for the toy factor (and because it fits me well). If I was feeling very flush and had the money, I'd go for a Kimber Colt 1911 in .45ACP. Shot one in Ft. Lauderdale and loved it.

Baldrick, I see that you mentioned that the Browning Hi-Power was inaccurate? It was also issued to specialist army units as well as regular army I believe throught the 70's & 80's was'nt it? Regards Yes, the Hi-Power was the issue pistol for all units for a considerable length of time. However it is primarily a defensive weapon, unlike the SOCOM pistol, so consistent long-range accuracy is less of a priority than useability by soldiers with differing levels of skill. The issue Browning is also built to fairly low tolerances. Compare this to the tolerances in, and customisation made to the Colt Delta and other pistols by the armourers at Quantico, for end use by the USMC and FBI. A lumbering 230gr .45 ACP round offers significant knock-down power than the feeble 9mm Para. The ACP is also relatively safer to use inside thin-skinned aircraft, because it does not over-penetrate. Wookie, the real-life SOCOM pistol is enormous, and weighs a tonne.
Wookie
Uhuh, But then again, I'm 6'5" with large hands and a "normal" pistol looks like a toy when I go shooting with it. I need something with a bit of weight/heft ot it...
Bazooka Joe
I would love to have my SW 29 back in 44 Mag, 6" Barrel, also had a SW 581, in 357 Mag, which was to be Bull barrelled, & have Custom Grips, never got round to it for obvious reasons.....& always admired of the Ruger Red Hawk, 6", in 44 Mag aswell,
mr smith
Mine is the Smith & Wesson Model 19 in .44 Mag.. Wasn't aware the model 19 came in .44 mag flavour. Only had two before the ban a S+W 586 and a little copy of the Colt 1911 made by Erma in .22.
Lloyd90
A 1911 In .45 A Revolver but not with too long a barrel in .357 and of course a 22LR revolver If I could only have one, it would be a close call between the 22lr revolver and the 357  Think the 22 would be sooooo much cheaper n alot of fun to plink lol

Really good looking gun. However, for shootability the Ruger P90 in 45 is awesome. My brother in law has one and I've put more than a few boxes through the tube. Fist sized groupings at 30'+. The gun is heavy enough (even empty) that recoil snap is negligible. The grip is just the right size for me. Maybe not a carry gun for concealment (definitely not in the summer) but a great home protection or truck gun. As for cartridge? The 45 wins hands down for me. A big heavy bullet will put a good whack on someone should you need it. Not the cheapest to shoot if you won't reload (or even if you do) but if you want cheap, get the 22LR conversion kit and buy a 1911. Thanks, Rick
