Nelly T
I am awaiting my FAC with slots for 22LR and 17HMR, will get the HMR first as my mate has 22, so here is the question; been looking at CZ's (cheaper, not as nice to look at but seem very reliable and great value), Sako Quad (costs another £150 for the 22 barrell to fill the slot on the ticket, not sure of mucking around changing barrells and zero etc, seems a solid gun though) or the Savage BTVS with thumbhole (not that many around from what I can see). Who has what, knows somebody with one, fired one?? I'm going down the S/H route so from what I have seen can get a decent set up from £350 - £700 ish.. Any views you have would be appreciated. Cheers

shaun4860
i have the sillouette in .22 and the sako in .17....both very nice guns but out of the box the sako is the better gun... but after fitting a brookes trigger kit to the cz its almost as good... you pay your money and take your choice really...... shaun

shoot57
i use the savage thumbhole and find it a very comfortable rifle to use, but maybe hard to find a used one at the moment, never discount a cz though they are very well made and very accurate out of the box, i have a 527 in 223 and i am a big fan of the set trigger and i see cz now offer an hmr with the set trigger i think it is a 453 and i would definitely have considered one if they were out when i was looking for my hmr

Nelly T
Thanks for the replies, it looks like a bit of driving will be in order, I have found a gun shop with a range selling the Sako and CZ's, the Savage is 30 miles down the road in another shop. casts_by_fly
if you want a petit rifle for lamping from a vehicle, the savage thumbhole is out. It is a robust gun almost the size of a fullbore. If you want a truck gun, I'd say the CZ with the short barrel will be the order of the day, though I don't know how big the sako is. That said, the savage is a sweet gun. There are a bunch of variations of the savage 93 series. I had a synthetic, stainless, sporter version in HMR (now another member here has it) and it is a sweetheart. I long considered putting the thumbhole stock on it because that stock feels so comfortable in my hands. That is the same thumbhole that is used on remington centerfires plus a bunch of other guns (it is a Boyd's JRS thumbhole stock). I chose against it for 2 reasons. First, getting the stock here would have been more trouble than it was worth. I would have ordered it in the US and shipped to a friend. Then when I went home on a trip I'd have brought it back with me. Not really worth the hassle because of reason 2. The way I was using the HMR was as a crawl around the field gun. The fact that it was short and lightweight meant that as I was belly crawling in an open field I could hold the gun in one hand out to the side easily. I could do that all day and not get tired either. So I never switched the stocks. Thanks, Rick
Beardo
i've got the CZ in .17hmr and it's lovely, i've shot Newsportshooters Quad a few times, and whilst i think the build quality and finish is better i found it a little small for my liking - too cramped for a 6 foot bloke. Both shoot the same amazing accuracy. The trigger kit for the CZ is only £12 as well.
the poacher
go for one of these mate cz 452 american screwcut i purchased this couple of months back and very happy with it very accurate gun heres a pic Edited March 25, 2009 by the poacher
al4x
I'll get shot for this but the quad is made to exchange barrels, I'd only get one if that was what I wanted to do, as it is its too bitty for me and I don't like the idea of changing them and messing arround with scope zero etc so i went for the CZ and not regretted it at all, with the trigger done they are very functional. chris123huntin
That stock looks similar to a Richards - rubberlegs sold an hmr fitted with one recently (gutted I missed out). GatGun
Marlin 917vs 16 " barrel 7 shot mag. Nice looking and shoots well. Stainless varmint barrel and nice blue/grey laminated stock. But I do sometimes think to myself "do I really need it" as at the end of the day its a tool, not an ornament But on the other hand laminated stocks are very hard wearing and are more stable than standard beech or walnut, and a stainless barrel means rust etc isnt a worry like a blued barrel that Im forever cleaning and oiling. And do you really need a varmint barrel for a rimmy ?, but i like the balance with the heavy barrell even though I dont like carrying it for long.... Guess im just a tackle tart like many of you Most will shoot and group similarily its just down to what feels right in your hands  I shot just as well with my mates cz the other night. They are all much of a muchness if you ask me.....

GatGun
Its a well put together gun with a good trigger and its very cosistent. Its screwcut to 16" with a sak mod and its well balanced as I prefer larger scopes for the HMR and at the minute it wears a 4-16x56 which contributes to a good all round balance and feel. Magazine can be a tad fiddly ( not the best design ) but apart from that id say if you like it get one  For the money thet are good value. But I wouldnt say its any better than the cz, just different
fieldwanderer
Reading this with interest as I'm looking for a .17hmr too! I really, really want that savage 917btvs (hope that's right?) and I'll stretch to it if at all possible, just a quick question though - how come marlins are so similar, are they made by the same people or something?
casts_by_fly
no, two totally different companies. Similar because they are designed for the same market, for the same purposes, to the same price point. The marlin design has been around forever in various forms (I have a 25N in 22LR, my dad has a 400-series in 22LR, both of which predate the 900 series). I wouldn't say that savage copied it because I'm sure they didn't. But how much simpler can you make a gun? The action is a piece of tubular steel with a couple slots cut into it. The triggers are very simple designs. That all keeps costs down. Thanks Rick
