MSc project:birds of prey

Hello,

I am currently undertaking a MSc project at Imperial College and want to find out the opinions of field sports enthusiasts on taking birds of prey from the wild in the UK. It would really help me a lot if you could please take 10 minutes to fill out this simple questionnaire which asks for your opinions on various issues concerning birds of prey in the UK. Please do not discuss this matter in this thread, as this would bias my results (people might change their minds after reading other people's thoughts on the matter).

Also, as this survey is vital for my project and I really need a lot of responses, I hope you don't mind if I bump this thread once every few days to prevent it getting pushed onto an old page where people won't see it. I will only do this until I have enough responses.

I would really appreciate your responses!

May I ask what is the title of your project, and what is the hypothesis you are hoping to prove/disprove? or the question you are trying to answer?

+1

I stopped half way through as I found some questions too vague. 'Birds of prey' encompasses a wide range of species, some of which are common in the UK but other very rare so I fail to really understand questions such as 'Wild birds of prey are rare and endangered animals in the UK'

exactly and I'm not sure on the removing of wild birds from the wild and making them captive if thats what it means or whether its nest raiding. Certainly some species are too prevalent in some areas but not in others so its one hell of a subject!

Thanks for all your help! I really appreciate your replies. Basically I want to find out the opinions of field sports enthusiasts, falconers, pigeon fanciers, bird conservationists and members of the public on taking birds of prey from the wild for falconry. I think that opinions also might depend on other demographic factors as well. I'm afraid I cannot discuss the matter here too much as this might change people's opinions before taking the survey.

Thanks again for your help and if you have not already done so, please fill out my questionnaire!

Yep, I stopped halfway through aswell, is there not enough in captivity to go round Penney ? Why take them from the wild ?

That being the case, I for one who keep Birds mysef, may aswell get the mist net out & justify my means along with the Falconers,

BJ.

That is not really acceptable - you have an ethicial obligation to obtain informed consent from subjects. I'm well aware of the information you want to gather, but you have not defined the purpose for which it will be used.

Your supervisor must have addressed issues of ethical practice with you before you began using members of the public as subjects, and there in reality are very few situations where research will be compromised by the subject knowing it's purpose - the psychologcial sciences being the main one.

This area is not one of them.

Given that you are asking for subjects on a pro-shooting, and pro-bird shooting forum in particular, social influence is not going figure strongly as a skewing factor in your results.

Being evasive and telling people not ask questions does not reflect well on the nature of postgraduate supervision Imperial College carries out.

I, and clearly one or two other people on here, are getting suspicious about any politcal motives or agenda you may have - is this research being sponsored by any one? LACS, PETA, RSPB, BASC?

Will we see a headline on the RSPCA web site in a year saying that shooters think its OK to take birds of prey eggs from nests?

Hello,

The purpose of the project is simply to find out the opinions of falconers, field sports enthusiasts, bird conservationists, pigeon fanciers and members of the public regarding taking birds from the wild for falconry. I want to see if opinions differ between stakeholder groups and if they vary depending on demographic differences. I intend to use internet forums to gather opinions as this is the quickest method and is likely to give the highest number of responses. Also, the British Falconers' Club and the Game Conservancy Trust have agreed to distribute some questionnaires to members and staff. The project is funded by myself and I am not affiliated with any other organisation. It only runs for 4 months which is why I need as many results as possible and I really appreciate people's help. You are not obliged to complete the survey and it is completely anonymous. Also, I only ask that people do not discuss the issue here because this might bias my results (someone might look at the thread before answering and this could change their opinions).

Again, I thank you all very much for completing the survey, I am very grateful for your help.

Thanks to everyone who has completed the survey-it has been really helpful. If you havn't could you please fill it out? I need more responses! I don't think it will be published but it might be made available on my supervisor's website.
